Langley municipalities host sports, culture and arts events for Youth Week – Aldergrove Star

Langley municipalities host sports, culture and arts events for Youth Week - Aldergrove Star

Langley’s young people have been at the forefront this week as celebrations for the 2022 Youth Week head into the final days.

Acknowledging the accomplishments and diversity of youth, BC Youth Week is celebrated annually during the first week of May. Locally, the Langley City and Langley City Youth have collaborated to bring a series of events for youth aged 12 to 24.

Upcoming events are as follows:

1. Youth Art Gallery

Coming up on May 5, a gallery will celebrate young artists by hosting an art exhibition that is open to everyone. Langley City is inviting the public to Timms Community Centre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m, as art pieces of students in Grade 6 to 12 are showcased.

There will be more than 25 pieces displayed.

“We know youth love to create and make art so we are celebrating young artists by hosting an art gallery to show their pieces. Anyone can come to Timms and see the amazing talent that youth in our community have,” said Taran Kingsbury, recreation programmer at the city.

There is no registration required, and the event is free for everyone. Timms Community Centre is located at 20399 Douglas Cres.

2. Movie Night

A comfy seat and a big screen at the Timms Community Center – Langley City is inviting youth in Grade 6 to 12 to watch Encanto, a 2021 animated movie.

The event planned for Friday, May 6, will run from 5 to 8 p.m. The entry is free for all youth. Attendees can bring snacks.

“It’s just like the theatre. Relax and watch in the mini movie theatre.” said Kingsbury.

3. Youth Week Festival

For the final day, celebrations will be held at Douglas Park. Activities such as button making, art station, raffle, cultural shows, crafts, goodies bag distribution, and more are planned to mark the end of 2022 youth week.

Drop-in is free for ages 12 to 24 for the Saturday, May 7 event, which runs from noon to 4 p.m.

“We are trying to bring out multi-culturalism through this activity. Meet new people and hang out with friends and staff,” Kingsbury added. “It is something they deserve.”

The idea to acknowledge the contributions of youth was first shared in 1995 by a small group of local municipal planners and youth recreation leaders in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Initially, discussions revolved around the idea of organizing a Youth Day.

Later the group decided to dedicate a full week focused on youth, and Youth Week was born. More than 20 years later, Youth Week has become a provincial celebration to promote awareness of youth.

For more information, people can contact Langley City Youth at 604-514-2999.

LANGLEY TOWNSHIP

Choose from these Active Youth activities still to come:

Shredding event benefits two Langley high schools – Aldergrove Star

Shredding event benefits two Langley high schools - Aldergrove Star

The Ron Dunkley Memorial Society wants to help people declutter some of the paper they have that’s no longer needed but is still lying around the home.

The society will host a shredding event Saturday, April 30 that will not only help people safely get rid of the documents but also raise money to help local high school students.

As with so many charities and community groups, COVID-19 prevented the society from holding traditional fundraising events. That meant the society wasn’t able to fully fund the scholarships for last year.

“We didn’t have it (shredding) in 2021, but, we did have a tree chipping event in January 2022 after Christmas, and raised money for one of our scholarships. This event on Saturday will hopefully raise enough for our second scholarship,” said Sandy Dunkley, the mother of Ron and the founder of the society.

The goal is to raise enough money to be able to provide $1,000 scholarships to Langley Secondary and Brookswood Secondary.

The public can take such things as cheques, confidential documents, bank statements, old bills, old tax returns, and even CDs for shredding and disposal.

People can drive up and the items will be unloaded from the backs of their vehicles or people can park and watch the items being shredded.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Town & Field Church, 20719 48th Ave. Shredding is by donation.

Dunkley, a Langley City firefighter, died 60 days after he was hit by a train in Seattle in 2010.

Ron was in the U.S. city in November, 2010 to attend a Seahawks game when, on his way back to his hotel, he stepped between the cars of a stationary train and into the path of a moving locomotive.

He was taken to hospital with catastrophic injuries and died 60 days later, on Jan. 4, 2011.

During the two months he spent in hospital, his medical bills had climbed to US $2.7 million.

Blue Cross would only cover the first $1 million. But after struggling to find the funds, the family was informed that an anonymous benefactor paid the entire bill.

That inspired creation of the society.

The Ron Dunkley Memorial Society, a registered charitable foundation, was formed to raise funds for a number of causes — the B.C. Professional Firefighters Burn Fund, Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, Canadian Blood Services and University of Washington Medicine among them.

Langley Lodge spotlighted at Saturday evening fundraiser – Aldergrove Star

Langley Lodge spotlighted at Saturday evening fundraiser - Aldergrove Star

Langley charities and community service groups will be at the forefront at tomorrow’s fundraiser event, which involves live music and a full-course dinner.

Langley Charitable Nights – a newly formed local initiative involving 10 local charities and Fairhaven Group – is hosting a series of events to raise funds for community service projects.

The Saturday, March 26 evening of dining and entertainment includes a music performance by Rod and The Mods – a Rod Stewart tribute group. Organizers have planned for 10 events, four of which have already taken place, shining the spotlight one of the charities at each event.

Langley Lodge will be the featured charity for the Saturday night show, which will take place in the main hall at the George Preston Recreation Centre, 20699 42nd Ave.

The food service will be offered by The Lodge Steakhouse and The Horse and Ryder Pub. Both locations are owned and managed by the Fairhaven Group.

A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to all the participating charities, and all the charities will receive an equal amount of money at the end of the 10 events.

As the representative of the featured charity, Patrick Matiowski, lodge director of fundraising, will share his thoughts and spread awareness about his organization’s work for local seniors. In addition to Matiowski’s presentation, printed materials will highlight Langley Lodge’s priorities for this year.

After the dinner and live performance, the dance floor will be opened up for the guests.

“It will be a good time… there will be great food and entertaining shows. It is also a great way for people to get out of their houses after COVID,” said Matiowski.

Langley Lodge needs money to replace the aging mattresses, conduct therapy programs, and organize events for seniors at the lodge. Matiowski thanked people who attended the last four shows for their generosity.

“They recognized the need to raise money for the local charities,” he said.

While the exact amount raised so far is yet to be calculated, Matiowski has high hopes from the events.

“If we [Langley Lodge] end up with $4,000… ah! that would be wonderful. We would be super pleased,” he said.

Matiowski’s estimates come from the fact that more than 100 tickets were sold at each of the previous events. Encouraging the community to attend the event in great numbers and donate generously, he reminded everyone to have a soft spot and a caring heart for the elderly and seniors in residential care.

“Tomorrow night is a night to show support. Come join us,” he commented.

Kim Sadler, of Fairhaven Group, urged people to contribute and enjoy an evening out. Matiowski lauded Fairhaven for taking a chance on this unique fundraising model.

Tickets for the dinner and show event range between $67.90 and $101.31, depending on the number of people in a group and type of dinner. To purchase tickets, people can visit the Eventbrite page.

Vaccine passports and ID will be required for admittance. COVID-19 safety measures valid on March 26 will be followed. For more information, people can call 604-532-4207.

Charitable Nights benefit:

Songwriters to sing and share stories at a live music event in Langley – Aldergrove Star

Songwriters to sing and share stories at a live music event in Langley - Aldergrove Star

Live music is coming back, and Langley looks all ready for it.

In a one-of-a-kind ‘Nashville in the round style’ show on Friday, March 11, four experienced songwriters will share their songs and stories about the songs being performed. The style involves a group of songwriters in a circle taking turns singing their songs.

Each of the four performers will present five songs – three before the intermission and two after – for the event, named, Songstage.

The event, which took place every six-weeks prior to pandemic, is coming back to the town after a two year gap to the Bez Arts Hub.

Though live events are returning, getting the audience back has not been easy, said Russ Rosen, artistic director and concert curator at Bez.

“We are pushing ads and sales, but it is taking a while for people to feel comfortable to come back to a live show,” he said.

The facility is now allowed to operate on 100 per cent capacity and Rosen hopes to fill the at least 60 per cent.

Russ and his wife, Sandy, started Bez. The Cloverdale residents say the community needs more outlets for arts and entertainment.

Russ said Langley residents have to drive all the way to Vancouver to enjoy such kind of art events.

“Art is highly valuable to make a city liveable and sustainable,” Russ commented. “If you do not have a space where people can engage in creativety, your city just becomes a bedroom for other cities.”

The couple hopes to see Langley become more of a hub for arts and culture for residents South of the Fraser.

He added that people who have visited Bez in past have shared positive feedback with his team.

The art hub invites artists of all levels – from well-known and up and coming to global and local. The four artists, who will be performig at this weekend’s event are:

  • Ivan Boudreau – SongStage host: A professional musician/songwriter for more than 45 years, with deep roots in Nova Scotia.
  • Suzie Ungerleider: American-born, Canadian-raised artist formerly known as Oh Susanna.
  • Matt Kennedy: He has been singing and playing guitar, mandolin and bass for decades on stages in Western Canada.
  • Gary Comeau: Born and raised in Nova Scotia, he plays a range of instruments including guitar, mandolin, fiddle, accordion and piano.

Russ, a musician himself, grew up in a Burnaby family of music lovers. He and his wife moved to Langley after travelling all over the world and started a dance school in the community. In 2017, the couple started Bez Arts Hub.

“Come back and be surprised all over again,” he said. “We have it seen it online but to get in the room with actual music and other people is a human experience. In the midst of trauma and difficulty, the art will alleviate us and lift us out of those difficulties and give us a better perspective on our neighbourhood and our world.”

The two-hour event starts 7:30 p.m. on March 11 at Bez Arts Hub, located at #102 20230 64th Ave. Tickets for the live show cost $35. There’s also the option for online streaming for $15.10.

To purchase tickets, people can visit the Bez website.
