Keep Olympic News Free
Support insidethegames.biz for as little as £10
For nearly 15 years now, insidethegames.biz has been at the forefront of reporting fearlessly on what happens in the Olympic Movement. As the first website not to be placed behind a paywall, we have made news about the International Olympic Committee, the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Commonwealth Games and other major events more accessible than ever to everybody.
insidethegames.biz has established a global reputation for the excellence of its reporting and breadth of its coverage. For many of our readers from more than 200 countries and territories around the world the website is a vital part of their daily lives. The ping of our free daily email alert, sent every morning at 6.30am UK time 365 days a year, landing in their inbox, is as a familiar part of their day as their first cup of coffee.
Even during the worst times of the COVID-19 pandemic, insidethegames.biz maintained its high standard of reporting on all the news from around the globe on a daily basis. We were the first publication in the world to signal the threat that the Olympic Movement faced from the coronavirus and have provided unparalleled coverage of the pandemic since.
As the world begins to emerge from the COVID crisis, insidethegames.biz would like to invite you to help us on our journey by funding our independent journalism. Your vital support would mean we can continue to report so comprehensively on the Olympic Movement and the events that shape it. It would mean we can keep our website open for everyone. Last year, nearly 25 million people read insidethegames.biz, making us by far the biggest source of independent news on what is happening in world sport.
Every contribution, however big or small, will help maintain and improve our worldwide coverage in the year ahead. Our small and dedicated team were extremely busy last year covering the re-arranged Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, an unprecedented logistical challenge that stretched our tight resources to the limit.
The remainder of 2022 is not going to be any less busy, or less challenging. We had the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing, where we sent a team of four reporters, and coming up are the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the Summer World University and Asian Games in China, the World Games in Alabama and multiple World Championships. Plus, of course, there is the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Unlike many others, insidethegames.biz is available for everyone to read, regardless of what they can afford to pay. We do this because we believe that sport belongs to everybody, and everybody should be able to read information regardless of their financial situation. While others try to benefit financially from information, we are committed to sharing it with as many people as possible. The greater the number of people that can keep up to date with global events, and understand their impact, the more sport will be forced to be transparent.
Support insidethegames.biz for as little as £10 – it only takes a minute. If you can, please consider supporting us with a regular amount each month. Thank you.
Tickets still available for most World Games events
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – With The World Games opening ceremonies on Thursday, July 7, there are still tickets available as of Wednesday night.
The $35 day pass tickets are no longer available, but tickets are still available for most of the events.
The day pass tickets allow you to attend multiple events in a day, but seating is on a first come/first serve basis.
We’re told over 350,000 tickets have been sold so far for the World Games. CEO Nick Sellers says the opening ceremony is down to about a thousand tickets from being a sellout. We checked Wednesday and some of the bigger events like Sumo wrestling are sold out.
You won’t be able to park close to certain event venues for security reasons, so you are highly encouraged to arrive early to get a good seat.
“There are some venues that are smaller than others, but generally we should have plenty of seating capacity for fans. If a venue is full obviously it will be first in and first out so we want to encourage people to get there early, but for the most part you should have no problem getting a seat and watching the action,” Sellers said.
If you are coming to the opening ceremony at Protective Stadium, get there early. A lot of roads are closed downtown for security reasons. Nelly, Sara Evans and the band Alabama are set to perform along a parade of athletes and much more.
Tickets are still available for the closing ceremony as well. Alabama native Lionel Richie is set to headline the star-studded event.

Birmingham literary events celebrate Commonwealth Games
Kyle Turakhia, Birmingham Stories hub manager, said: “Incorporating sports and physical activity into core subjects such as English can be a great way to motivate young people, instil a range of positive values within students and improve cognitive outcomes, including reading skills.”
Birmingham seeing economic boost from busy weekend events
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A busy weekend in Birmingham is ahead, with sold out concerts and sporting events across the city.
Birmingham is booming with events this weekend, like the USFL game at Legion Field and the sold-out Garth Brooks concert at Protective Stadium, which can hold more than 40,000 people.
While those events will bring in big tourist bucks, city leaders said Birmingham is already having an economic boost because of these types of events.
Just this past weekend, the city hosted the SWAC Baseball Tournament and HBCU Springcoming. Director for Office of Innovation and Economic Opportunity Cornell Wesley said they project those events brought in around four million dollars alone.
Wesley said so far, the USFL is also bringing the city big bucks, with viewership at more than one million, they think the end of the season will total more than 50 million dollars in revenue.
Wesley said they are also gearing for even more money maker events this summer.
“We have the jazz fest upcoming,” Wesley said. “Everyone knows about The World Games. It will be a huge economic anchor and has the potential to be what the Olympics were in Atlanta in ‘96, but for Birmingham. Birmingham has the infrastructure, has the talent, has the means, and has the intentionality to be a sports town and entertainment capitol.”
Birmingham hotel bookings are already up 10 percent this summer compared to last.

Commonwealth Games – Birmingham 2022: When is it, host city, events, Aussie athletes, how to watch in Australia
The Commonwealth Games are fast approaching, with Team Australia gearing up for the first edition of the event since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Here is everything you need to know ahead of the 2022 Games.
When are the Commonwealth Games 2022?
The upcoming edition of the Commonwealth Games will take place from July 28 – August 8, 2022, bookmarked by the opening and closing ceremonies.
Due to the rescheduling of other major sporting events such as the UEFA European Women’s Championship, the entire schedule of the Games has been moved by a day from its original dates to avoid any clashes.
Where are the Commonwealth Games 2022?
Birmingham is the host city for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
Based in the West Midlands region of England, the city will host the Games for the first time ever.
The event will take place in summer, with comfortable temperature highs of 21 degrees Celcius.
Durban was originally named as the host for the 2022 Games but was forced to withdraw in 2017 due to financial problems.
By the end of the year, Birmingham was eventually named the replacement host city.
Commonwealth Games 2022 events
Five new sports will be added this year to the existing 10 core sports from the 2018 Games.
Road cycling, judo, triathlon, table tennis, and wrestling will now feature in Birmingham as part of the latest edition of the Commonwealth Games Charter.
A full breakdown of the events is available here.
Which Aussie athletes are taking part in the Commonwealth Games 2022?
A record 474 Australian athletes participated in 2018, with the size of this year’s team unconfirmed.
Stars from the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo are expected to compete, including Ariarne Titmus (swimming), Nicola McDermott (high jump), and Peter Bol (running).
The Australian contingent will join a pool of approximately 4,500 athletes in Birmingham, stemming from 72 nations.
How to watch the Commonwealth Games in Australia
Channel 7 will broadcast all the action from Birmingham across their free-to-air channels and streaming service 7Plus.
The broadcaster has an exclusive deal with the Commonwealth Games Federation that covers broadcast, digital, radio, social media, and subscription television rights.
Specific details and timings will be announced closer to the event.
Upcoming Commonwealth Games host venues
The Commonwealth Games will return to Australia after 2022, with Victoria officially announced as the host for the 2026 edition.
It marks the first time the Games will not be held exclusively in one city, with a number of regional Victorian cities combing to host various events.
The city of Hamilton in Canada is the likely 2030 host, although this is yet to be confirmed.
