Council hosts a range of FREE events for European Heritage Open Days 2022 – Fermanagh & Omagh District Council

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has organised a number of free events as part of this year’s European Heritage Open Days (EHOD). Taking place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September 2022, EHOD is an annual celebration of local architecture, history and culture across Northern Ireland.  This year’s theme focuses on Sustainable Heritage; Learn, Use and Enjoy.

Get out and about in Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark with a Guided Walk at Gortmaconnell or enjoy a history bike ride at Old Castle Archdale in Fermanagh. Discover some of the sites and stories of Fermanagh’s Medieval Lough Erne Pilgrimage Route at an interesting talk at Enniskillen Castle. Why not take a guided tour of Cole’s Monument or a walking tour of Enniskillen as Gaeilge with Tursa Inis Ceithleann?

In Omagh, you can enjoy a Historic Buildings walk and talk which includes an open door look inside the Provincial Bank Building to find out about the building’s past and its future plans. Find out more about the post glacial landscapes of the Sperrins on an interesting and active bus trip around the southern Sperrrins, and children will love the Forage Walk at Ecclesville Demesne in Fintona.

Still to come, look out for ‘Meet the Giant’ walking tours – an opportunity to walk to the Mullaghcarn summit and meet the new Guardian of the Sperrins. The walking tours will be delivered in English and Irish language.

Speaking about the programme, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Barry McElduff said;

“I am delighted that the Council (FODC) is actively participating in European Heritage Open Days 2022.

This annual event provides an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to explore the built and natural heritage of the District through specially organised events.

This year’s theme focusses on sustainability and how our historical sites can be more environmentally friendly, which is important in the context of Climate Change.

The Council (FODC) is committed to ensuring that our natural and built heritage is cherished, sustainably managed and accessible.  The European Heritage Open Days provide an opportunity to achieve this and ensure that our heritage is preserved for future generations.

I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the European Heritage Open Days weekend to explore some of the heritage of our District.”

Admission to all events and activities is free of charge but booking is essential.

FARSO, Denmark (AP) — Ross McGowan slipped into a four-way tie for the lead of the European tour’s Made in HimmerLand after the third round on Saturday.

McGowan led the first two rounds on his own, but four birdies and two bogeys gave him a 2-under-par 69 and 17 under total.

Fellow Englishman Oliver Wilson was at 19 under after 16 holes until consecutive bogeys dropped him into a share of the lead.

A 65 was also posted by another Englishman, Matthew Southgate, who eagled his first hole and birdied the last to join the leaders.

Francesco Laporta of Italy was there with them when he closed with three birdies in his last five holes for a 68.

One shot behind the leaders was Matthew Jordan after carding 62.

Join European Public Health Week 2022

16-20 May 2022 – online and across Europe and Central Asia

The 2022 European Public Health Week (EUPHW) will take place from 16-20 May 2022. Every year, WHO/Europe supports the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) with the EUPHW campaign, by promoting the themes, providing key messages and organizing EUPHW-related events.

The theme for this year’s EUPHW is ‘Health throughout the life course’, with each campaign day focusing on a different topic:

  • Monday 16 May: A healthy and health-literate youth
  • Tuesday 17 May: Vaccination as a key prevention strategy
  • Wednesday 18 May: Climate change affects our health
  • Thursday 19 May: No health without mental health
  • Friday 20 May: Building resilient health systems.

The European Public Health Week (EUPHW) aims to:

  • Make the case for public health and a more inclusive society across Europe
  • Raise awareness and amplify existing messages on five specific public health themes, in line with key organizations at the European level
  • Create trust and innovative means of collaboration among all professionals, contributing to public health at local, national, regional and European levels.

How you can get involved

  1. You can host an event. Whether you are an institution, a health professional or an ordinary citizen interested in one of this year’s five EUPHW themes, you may organize your own event(s) on one or more days of the week. Ironman re-opens entries to 11 popular European events by increasing registration numbers - Triathlon Magazine Canada

While many observers feel that there are already more than enough participants on most Ironman courses, the company says it has come up with ways to optimize and expand event space safely so that it can open up more spots for athletes to sign up for races that are already full.

After two years of race cancellations and deferments, entering many of the most popular Ironman events has been near impossible in 2022. Athletes who have been frustrated that they haven’t been able to sign up for some of the most popular events will have another chance, now, though as Ironman has opened up registration to 11 Ironman and 70.3 races, including the two Ironman European Championship events in Germany (Hamburg and Frankfurt) and UK.

“Due to the huge interest we received for these races originally, and taking into account a disappointing couple of years of race cancellations, we really wanted to find a way of giving athletes the race and experience they were dreaming of this year,” said Declan Byrne, Vice President of Operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa for The Ironman Group. “So, we have been working closely with the operations teams in each event country to make this happen while continuing to ensure a smooth and safe event experience. We are excited to be re-opening these races to the public and look forward to welcoming athletes from all over the world to some of our most sought-after European races.”
