SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros track & field team won five events, set 15 personal records and made three entries into the program record books on Saturday at the Roadrunner Invitational at the Park West Athletics Complex.

UTRGV coach Shareese Hicks has been excited to get the Vaqueros’ steeplechasers in a race, and they did not disappoint in their debut. Sophomore Samantha Gonzalez won the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:36.69, a personal record and the eighth best time in program history. Sophomore Ricardo Garcia won the men’s event in a personal best 9:48.33, and junior Harlingen High alum Edward Ramos claimed second in a personal best 10:15.82.

Sophomore PSJA High alum Marco Guajardo won both the men’s javelin and triple jump, setting a new personal record with a throw of 50.51 meters in the javelin. Guajardo also PRd in the 100-meter dash, running 11.28 to finish 12th

Sophomore Uxia Pereira earned first in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:06.29. Junior Harlingen High alum Jasmyn Tulloch finished second in the event and sophomore Weslaco High alum Lisa Sanchez took fourth.

UTRGV’s throwers had another solid outing. Sophomore Michael Campbell took second in both the men’s shot put and discus, entering the record books with the ninth best discus toss of 50.09 meters. Redshirt senior Christian Hall-Gardner was second in the men’s hammer throw and fourth in discus. Junior La Feria alum Julian Trevino and sophomore Lyford alum Kayleen May were second and fourth in the men’s and women’s javelin, respectively.

The sprinters turned in strong performances, too. Sophomore Jermarrion Stewart finished second in the men’s 100-meter dash in 10.58 – tying the program’s fourth-best time – and seventh in the 200-meter dash. Stewart, Guajardo and sophomore Mission Veterans alum Alex Galvan all PR’d in the 100. Redshirt freshman Jaleel Scott set a personal best in the men’s 200-meter dash, finishing 14th

Redshirt sophomore Elizabeth Ortiz set personal records in both the women’s 200-meter dash (25.95) and 400-meter dash (1:00.87), taking sixth and fourth in the events. Sophomore Brownsville Porter alum Jorge Salazar placed third in a personal best time of 49.70 in the men’s 400-meter dash.

The Vaqueros distance runners also had a good meet. In the men’s 1,500-meter run, junior Edinburg North alum Tristan Pena (second), sophomore Alex Munoz (third) and graduate student La Joya High alum Ricardo Mendoza (seventh) all finished in the top 10. Munoz notched a personal best. Junior Anahi Romo and sophomore McAllen Rowe alum Janie Delgado were third and fourth in the women’s 1,500-meter run, with Delgado clocking a personal record.
