KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Cody Rhodes has been ruled out of action for 9 months due to a torn pec
  • The American Nightmare competed at Hell in a Cell with the injury
  • Cody is likely to be fit in time for Wrestlemania 39
Cody Rhodes‘ rise to the top of the WWE ladder was halted due to a torn pec that he suffered before his Hell in a Cell match against Seth Rollins. The American Nightmare looked set to establish himself after yet another win over Rollins but his rise quest to climb to the top was stymied due to the injury.
WWE has announced that Cody will stay out of action for 9 months, which rules him out of many marquee events. From Royal Rumble to Survivor Series, here’s a look at marquee events that Cody Rhodes will miss due to a torn pec –

Money in the Bank 2022

Cody was booked as the face of the company since his return and he was the sole superstar featured in the advertisement for Money in the Bank 2022. He became the center of attraction on the updated poster for the event. Despite the injury, the former Intercontinental Champion teased appearing on the show but he will now sit out of action for long.

Clash at the Castle

Cody was among very few superstars on the poster for Clash at the Castle 2022. The premium event will mark WWE’s comeback to the UK after 30 years. The UK hasn’t hosted a premium live event since SummerSlam 1992. Cody looked set to be part of a marquee match at the event. But the fans in Cardiff won’t be able to watch him in action.

SummerSlam

SummerSlam is the Biggest Part of the Summer and can draw countless fans to the stadium as Wrestlemania does. Before the Clash at the Castle, Cody would have been in action in a stadium against another top-rated superstar at SummerSlam.

Survivor Series

Survivor Series is one of the top 4 premium live events of the year and Cody would have probably led Team Raw or would have been a part of a championship match. In his absence, Bobby Lashley, Kevin Owens and Rollins could be the frontrunners to lead the red brand later in the year.

Royal Rumble 2023

After it was confirmed that Cody was competing against Rollins with a torn pec, the fans expected him to make his return at Royal Rumble 2023, which is scheduled to take place in January. But since he is out of action for 9 months, the WWE Universe shouldn’t expect him to be one of the surprise entrants at the event.

Cody remains in line to be back at Wrestlemania 39 and he might once again face Rollins at the Show of the Shows.

Jubilee TV viewing figures down on previous royal occasions

Television viewing figures for the first day of the Queen’s jubilee were substantially down on previous royal occasions, although millions still tuned in.

A peak audience of 7.5 million people watched the BBC’s broadcast of trooping the colour on Thursday, as it kicked off a long weekend of coverage to celebrate 70 years of the Queen’s reign.

Later that evening, the BBC’s broadcast of the lighting of beacons to mark the Queen’s 70th year on the throne attracted a peak 5 million viewers, according to figures produced by rating agency BARB.

By comparison the audience for Prince Philip’s funeral last year peaked at more than 13 million people, while Prince William and Harry’s weddings hit 26 million and 18 million viewers respectively.

The relatively muted figures suggest the public took advantage of the extra bank holiday and good weather to head outside, rather than being glued to their televisions.

While trooping the colour was still the most watched programme on terrestrial television, ITV’s Coronation Street and Britain’s Got Talent were not far behind, with almost 4 million viewers each.

The BBC has sometimes struggled with the tone of its royal coverage, having come under criticism during the Queen’s diamond jubilee in 2012 for trying to use younger presenters in an attempt to attract a wider audience. Last year, the national broadcaster also received a record number of complaints from members of the public who felt it went overboard with wall-to-wall coverage of Prince Philip’s death.

Kirsty Young returned to television to anchor the BBC’s jubilee coverage after four years off air after a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis with secondary fibromyalgia.

The BBC’s live commentary was provided by Huw Edwards and strayed into controversy when a former officer in the Irish Guards described the soldiers as “a great mick cocktail”.

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton said: “The micks have this fantastic mix of guards’ discipline and pursuit of excellence, with that Irish ‘irrational tenth’ if I can quote Lawrence of Arabia, which makes it the best regiment on the planet.”

Edwards interjected to say that while viewers might think the term was offensive, “it’s worth underlining that’s what you Irish Guards call yourselves”.

Joe Dwyer of Sinn Féin wrote on Twitter: “The year is 2022 … and a BBC presenter and someone from the British army are explaining why ‘micks’ actually isn’t an offensive term for Irish people.”

The relatively moderate interest in watching royals waving from carriages and soldiers in formation may also be a symptom of good weather on a bank holiday. Much of Britain was dry on Thursday, with many attending street parties and others using the long weekend to travel.

More than 20 million people watched the Queen’s coronation in 1953, overtaking radio listeners for the first time in television history.

A BBC spokesperson said: “The trooping the colour was the most watched show of the day with over 7 million viewers, and we are proud to be bringing audiences coverage of these once in a lifetime events to mark the platinum jubilee with a range of special programming on the BBC across the extended bank holiday weekend.”

Royal Manitoba Winter Fair cancels pig and calf scrambles after animal protection group speaks out

Royal Manitoba Winter Fair cancels pig and calf scrambles after animal protection group speaks out

The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair is doing away with hog and calf scrambles at its event next week after animal welfare organizations said such events violate federal and provincial animal cruelty laws.

The fair is set to run March 29 to April 2 in Brandon, Man.

“The health and welfare of our animals is important to us and has always been a top priority,” Provincial Exhibition President Kathy Cleaver said in a statement posted online.

“We are excited about having the fair back this year and can’t wait to welcome everyone back to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.”

This comes after the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) and national animal law organization Animal Justice put out a call last week for the public to contact fair organizers to have the scrambles cancelled.

“This decision is a step in the right direction, and we feel that it positively reflects the values and the opinions of many Manitobans who no longer tolerate animal scramble events,” said Brittany Semeniuk, an animal welfare consultant with the Winnipeg Humane Society.

According to the WHS and Animal Justice, pig scrambles, also known as “pig wrestling” typically involve kids chasing and trying to grab and hold pigs to stop them from breaking free. The calf scrambles involve teens chasing and grabbing calves to remove a halter from their neck.

Kaitlyn Mitchell, staff lawyer with Animal Justice, said the practice could be seen as illegal because it causes distress and suffering to animals.

“So that means not only physical injuries, although there is certainly a risk of physical injuries here when you have children chasing and tackling animals, but it’s also illegal to cause extreme anxiety and distress to animals. And that’s really at their core what these events do,” Mithchell said.

“You release these baby animals into a ring, and you encourage youth to chase them around and tackle them, and there’s no good reason for it. On top of that, this is just for entertainment.”

Mitchell said after issuing a call to the public to contact organizers to have the events cancelled, about 640 people took action through Animal Justice’s alert. The WHS also put out an alert and created an online petition that was signed by over 600 people.
