Three School Records in Two Events – Stanford University Athletics

Three School Records in Two Events - Stanford University Athletics
ATLANTA –  The Cardinal broke three school records in just two events to start the NCAA Championships and finished in the top eight in both relays on day one.

“It was a fantastic start to the meet, especially coming off of the Pac-12 Championships, that was a heck of a meet for us,” said The Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming, Dan Schemmel. “For us to improve on our times and our placing was just fantastic.”

The Cardinal came out ready to make waves, breaking the 200 medley relay school record that was set earlier this month at the Pac-12 championships. Prior to this season, the record had stood for 13 years.

The time of 1:22.41 secured Stanford a spot on the podium for the top eight finishers. With the eighth place finish, the relay team of Leon MacAlister, Ron Polonsky, Andrei Minakov, Jonny Affeld became automatic NCAA All-America selections.

“I’m super proud of the guys,” Schemmel added. “That was the best time for Leon leading off, it was the best time for Ron, Andrei, and Jonny right on his best.”

The Cardinal kept the momentum heading into the second and final event of the day, the 800 free relay. The team was made up of Andrei Minakov, Luke Maurer, Ron Polonsky, and Preston Forst.

“Andrei and Ron were on both relays which is a tough double, and they held their own and put up fantastic splits so that was really great,” said Schemmel “All the splits across the board were awesome. In the 800, all four of those guys had best times.”

Andrei Minakov led off with a blistering 1:31.49, breaking Jack Levant’s record of 1:32.61 from 2018. Luke Maurer, Ron Polonsky, and Preston Forst kept the speed up throughout the race helping Stanford snag bronze with a time of 6:06.83.

This marked another school record, breaking the previous record set at the Pac-12 championships by nearly two seconds. The Cardinal’s third place finish was its best in the event since another third place finish in 2015.

Stanford will begin the individual events tomorrow morning in the preliminary round at 10 a.m.

“We want to keep the momentum going, it’s going to be a very fast session,” said Schemmel. “I think we’ve shown we’re ready to be fast as well so we just want to be competitive and get as many final swims as we can.”

The Cardinal will compete in 500 free, 200 I.M., 50 free, and 1-meter diving, and the 200 free relay tomorrow.

Sullivan County has School Showcase events in March, April

Sullivan County has School Showcase events in March, April

BLOUNTVILLE — Sullivan County Schools is inviting its families, stakeholders and community members to the first annual Sullivan County Schools Showcase.

During March and April, each school in Sullivan County that has not yet done so will host an evening highlighting its campus.

Director of Schools Evelyn Rafalowski said that most schools have not had parents and the public in them the past few years except for athletic events, and the Showcases are a time for people to walk the halls and see the classrooms, not just the gyms, athletic fields, auditoriums and theaters.

During the event, each school will showcase its individual programs. Students and guests may visit classrooms, academic learning spaces, see displays of student-created work and experience what makes each school a special place for students.

“We hope our community will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to see the exciting things happening in Sullivan County Schools,” a news release from the school district said.

Illnesses Connected to Events at Crystal Lake Montessori School

An investigation is underway into illnesses that were reported following events at Crystal Lake Montessori School in Woodstock, according to the McHenry County Department of Health.

In a Facebook post Friday, the health department explained it published a survey online, seeking responses from anyone who contracted illnesses after attending classroom activities or after-school events on or after Feb. 7.

Anyone who ate food at either a classroom or school-sponsored event is encouraged to complete the survey whether or not they became ill. Those who became sick and didn’t attend any school events are also advised to take the survey, health officials said, noting it will aid in the investigation.

‘Threat to learning activities’: Tripura bans political events on school grounds

Tripura, Tripura bans political events on school grounds, Tripura politics on school ground, Tripura BJP, indian express

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Tripura has issued an order banning political parties from using school resources, including playgrounds, to hold political events or rallies.

In an order issued on Saturday, director of school education Chandni Chandran notified guidelines for using school buildings, classrooms, school premises, school playgrounds, conference halls and auditoriums saying, “…. no school resources including playground shall be used by any political party/organizer to conduct political functions/rallies etc..”.

The order also said that a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the director of secondary or elementary education directorate or the concerned district education officer may be obtained for conducting other programmes, that too only on holidays or after school hours.

The order also mentioned that a few headmasters or teachers-in-charge of schools were found to have approved the use of school grounds for political gatherings during school hours. It added that the department would hold such actions “completely unacceptable” as they pose “serious threat to teaching-learning activities” and violate the norms of the department, especially since the schools have now reopened after long breaks owing to Covid-19.

Action will be taken against headmasters or teachers-in-charge for violations already committed, said the order and warned against violations in the future.

The order stated that headmasters or teachers-in-charges would be held responsible to inform the inspector of schools or district education officers if any event is planned. It would be immediately taken up with local administration and police authorities, asking for cancelling the concerned programme, said the order.

No vaccine passport means B.C. school events capped at 50% for spectators: minister

No vaccine passport means B.C. school events capped at 50% for spectators: minister

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has declared school-based activities an essential service, so visitors do not need to present a vaccine passport.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Adrian Dix says about two-thirds of all non-urgent cancelled surgeries in the province are in the Interior Health region.

He says the proportion of health-care workers calling in sick is higher in that region, so there are some challenges in clearing backlogs.

“But most everywhere else, we’re going to be aggressively moving to rebook surgeries in the coming weeks because people need their surgeries. And even if we describe these as non-urgent scheduled surgeries, they’re all important, they’re all necessary,” he says.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 16, 2022.
