Roadrunners win three events on Saturday at J. Fred Duckett Twilight - UTSA Athletics
HOUSTON — Ingeborg Gruenwald, Sigrid Kleive and Jemuel Miller all were victorious at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight to headline action for the UTSA track & field teams on Saturday at Wendel D. Ley Track.
Gruenwald won the women’s long jump, Kleive took top honors in the women’s javelin and Miller soared to victory in the men’s triple jump for the Roadrunners in the one-day meet hosted by Rice.
Gruenwald led a 1-2 UTSA finish in the long jump, leaping 6.36 meters (20-10.5) to register her fourth triumph in the event this calendar year. The second-team indoor All-American logged her top jump of the competition on her second trip down the runway to finish ahead of sophomore teammate Oreoluwa Adamson, who measured 5.93m (19-5.5) for runner-up positioning.
Meanwhile, Kleive tossed the javelin to a distance of 41.52m (136-2) for a comfortable win ahead of Houston Baptist’s Kiley Kjellstrom’s second-place toss of 33.47m (109-9). It marked the second win of the outdoor campaign for the Norwegian, who also struck gold with a season-best 44.29m (145-4) measurement at the UTSA Invitational in March.
Miller also cruised to victory on Saturday evening in his specialty event. The freshman from Barbados broke the sand at a distance of 15.57m (51-1) on his sixth and final attempt of the competition, an improvement from a 15.35m (50-4.5) effort on his second try, a mark that gave the Conference USA Indoor champion and first-team indoor All-American the lead for good ahead of Texas Southern’s Chadrick Williams (14.63m/48-0).
Abby Balli bettered her personal-best time in the 1,500m with a runner-up clocking of 4:32.88 in the night session of track events. Racing near her hometown of Pasadena, the two-time C-USA mile medalist posted a PB for the third consecutive race in a little more than a week, as she finished second in 4:33.26 at the Beach Invitational last Saturday one day after clocking a then-career-best time of 4:35.24 at the Mt. SAC Relays in California.
UTSA displayed its depth in the horizontal jumps, as Christiaan Le Roux leaped to a personal-best mark of 7.49m (24-7) to finish third in the men’s long jump, while Miller took fifth with a leap of 7.28m (23-10.75), his top mark outdoors this year.
Back on the track, true freshman Jose Garcia sped to a fourth-place time of 10.65 in the men’s 100m, while Creshaun Cresser circled the oval in a time of 56.82, only one-hundredth of a second off her PB set last month at the UTSA Invitational, to cross fourth in the women’s 400m. Mackenzie Grimes was fourth in the women’s 400m hurdles in 1:01.22 and Brooke Lomax logged a career best while finishing seventh in the 800m in 2:12.20, an improvement from her 2:12.84 posted at the 2021 C-USA Outdoor.
In other field-event action, Acacia Astwood placed fifth in the women’s hammer with a throw of 48.36m (158-8), Paul Bouey was sixth in both the men’s shot put (16.32m/53-6.5) and discus (50.17m/164-7) and Zoe Shanklin earned sixth in the women’s shot put with a mark of 14.39m (47-2.5).
The Roadrunners will be back in action next Saturday, April 30, when they travel to College Station for the Alumni Muster in their final tune-up for the C-USA Outdoor Championships, which they will host on May 12-15 at Park West Athletics Complex.
