Upcoming Events: Discovery Park Walking Tour Saturday and Cowen Park Picnic Tuesday August 30th

Upcoming Events: Discovery Park Walking Tour Saturday and Cowen Park Picnic Tuesday August 30th
The Discovery Park Loop Trail passes by a wide variety of plant life and trees. (Photo by The Urbanist)

The Urbanist is excited to announce two more events in our summer series. This Saturday (August 27) we’ll be meeting at Discovery Park at 11am and hiking the Loop Trail, starting the hike from the North parking lot around 11:35am. RSVP for the Discovery Park walking tour.

On Tuesday August 30, we will be picnicking at Cowen Park starting at 5:30pm and doing a stroll through Ravenna Park at 7pm. RSVP on our Cowen Park Eventbrite page.

Discovery Park Walking Tour

At 534 acres, Discovery Park is the largest city park in Seattle. The Loop Trail is a great way to take in the spectacular variety the park has to offer, from thick old growth forests to flowery meadows to the scenic Magnolia bluffs overlooking the Salish Sea. The hike is about three miles with some rolling hills, but no major elevation change. The trail is well-kept, but it is not fully accessible for people with disabilities.

The park used to be a military base (Fort Lawton) before it was decommissioned and converted to a park in the 1960s. The fledgling park was the site of one of the most dramatic nonviolent demonstrations in Seattle history when a 1970 Indigenous occupation of part of the fort led to the creation of the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center on a northern section of the property.

“Led by Bernie Whitebear (Sin Aikst), Bob Satiacum (Puyallup) and indigenous peoples of Western Washington, 100+ Native Americans and supporters occupied areas of Fort Lawton using a base camp just outside the fence line,” the City of Seattle website notes. “Famous supporters such as Jane Fonda and Black Panther chapter of Seattle helped increase national attention to the cause.”

We’ll meet at the picnic table next to the Route 33 bus stop at Discovery Park’s North Parking Lot. (Image by The Urbanist)

More recently, activism is leading to an affordable housing complex being added, as the last remaining Fort Lawton Army Reserve compound is being decommissioned and its 34 acres converted to housing and recreational space, including about five acres to be added to Discovery Park. In 2019, the Seattle City Council approved a redevelopment plan to create affordable housing on the site, with at least 235 homes in the works. Magnolia homeowner activists led by Elizabeth Campbell fought the affordable housing and mounted a legal challenge, but they have only succeeded in slowing down the project rather than stopping it. Urbanists and housing advocates rallied in support of the project and opponents have all but exhausted legal avenues.

Discovery Park’s South Beach includes lots of driftwood to sit on and a great view of Mount Rainier, the Magnolia Bluffs, and Elliott Bay. While not on the Loop Trail, it’s a half-mile side trip. (Photo by Doug Trumm)

Urbanist staff will be on hand to answer questions about Discovery Park and related plans, but participants will also be free to mingle and take in the natural beauty during the hike.

Getting there: Metro’s Route 33 bus stops at the North parking lot. We’ll congregate at the picnic table near the bus stop (Illinois Avenue & Texas Way), which is the end of the line, and hit the trail shortly after the Route 33 run scheduled to arrive at 11:35am shows up. Thanks to the protected bike lanes on Gilman Avenue W, biking to Discovery Park is also a great option. If you’re coming from Ballard, it’s also possible to cross the Ballard Locks and take the secret forested path through Kiwanis Memorial Preserve Park, which is accessed from 33rd Avenue W. There isn’t specified bike parking area at the North parking lot, but there are lots of signposts to lock to. If you are taking an app-based bike, be aware more operators cut e-assist and do not their bikes to be parked within Discovery Park boundaries so you may want to park at the edge of the park and walk the rest of the way.

Cowen Park Potluck and Ravenna Park Walk

On Tuesday August 30th, The Urbanist is hosting a potluck picnic at Cowen Park starting at 5:30pm. We’ll have snacks to share, but we encourage folks to bring something to contribute or snack on/sip yourself. This social event is intended to take advantage of summer to get outdoors and enjoy Seattle’s beautiful park system.

Ravenna Park and the neighboring Ravenna Boulevard were designed by the Olmsted brothers as part of a plan to given Seattle a world-class park system. Cowen Park is the adjoining park to the west also integrated into the Olmsted-designed system, with the ravine trail starting at the northern edge of Cowen Park. Stand in the middle of Ravenna ravine and you hardly know you’re in the middle of a bustling city, with a new trove of skyscrapers rising just to the south in the U District, as giant trees provide thick canopy overhead.

After snacking and chatting at Cowen Park, we’ll wander into Ravenna Park to enjoy the Olmsted-designed trail system and get lost in the trees. The Ravenna walk will start at 7pm. The ravine trail is well-maintained gravel and has a steep hill at the start but is accessible to people with disabilities.

Urbanist writer Ryan Packer rides their bike over the 20th Avenue pedestrianized bridge, with tree canopy on either side.

Getting there: Cowen Park is well served by transit, including Route 45, 67, and 73. It’s 0.4 miles southeast of Roosevelt Station, making light rail an easy way to get there. There are also good biking options. From the west, protected bike lanes connect to the park via Ravenna Boulevard. The Burke-Gilman trails gets within a few blocks of Ravenna Park, with the ravine trail connecting through to Cowen Park.

RSVP for the Ravenna-Cowen Park event on our Eventbrite page.

Doug Trumm is the executive director of The Urbanist. An Urbanist writer since 2015, he dreams of pedestrianizing streets, blanketing the city in bus lanes, and unleashing a mass timber building spree to end the affordable housing shortage and avert our coming climate catastrophe. He graduated from the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Washington. He lives in East Fremont and loves to explore the city on his bike.

SIU welcomes students to back to campus, announces upcoming events

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale will roll out the maroon carpet to welcome new and returning students to campus in grand Saluki style with a host of special activities during Saluki Startup and Weeks of Welcome.

Students move onto campus Aug. 18 and 19, with classes starting Aug. 22. Preparations have been underway for months to ensure a smooth transition for students to their new campus home away from home. View the online schedule, which is constantly being updated as activities are added. Students can also stay abreast of what’s happening by downloading the Saluki Superfan app, their portal to keep tabs on student life throughout the year.

Dawg Days helps create a successful transition

SIU’s Dawg Days New Student Retreat, set for Aug. 15-18 at Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center, is an action-packed week. Organized and led by students, it is designed to help their new student peers successfully transition to college life.

move-in-21-v2-sm.jpgParticipants learn about Saluki traditions, services and the support system as they network and engage in fun activities, including battleship games in canoes, duct-tape dodgeball, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, themed evening socials, a costume party and much more. They will also connect with campus administrators, faculty and staff, as well as with one another.

Forging connections through Saluki Startup

Creating a Saluki family connection is what Saluki Startup, set for the early days of the semester, is all about. During special activities on Aug. 18-21, the university will help returning and new students get acquainted with one another and the campus.

A recent popular addition to Saluki Startup is Light up the Lake, set for 7-9 p.m. Aug. 18 as the boat dock will be glowing all evening. Campus Lake/Becker Pavilion will come alive with glow-in-the-dark games and activities, slacklining, a climbing wall, a DJ, freebies, snacks, a pottery throwing wheel and other fun Saluki experiences.

A Resource Fair provides information about what’s available and how to connect with the campus departments or units as well as community organizations 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 19, in Ballroom D of the Student Center. The Saluki Startup Kickoff at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at Saluki Stadium is a giant pep rally, complete with a class picture for new students. Afterward, the action moves to the Student Recreation Center for Late Nite at the Rec, with volleyball, swimming, basketball and a host of other activities from 9 to 11 p.m.

2018-DawgDays-sm.jpgThe Student Center is the place to be at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 for the popular Dawg’s Night Out student fest as participants enjoy arts and crafts, inflatables, games, food and assorted revelry.

A favorite tradition, the Chancellor’s Welcome Fest, will be 1-3 p.m. Aug. 21, complete with a cookout, DJ, climbing wall, yard and watermelon games, giveaways and the chance to get acquainted with campus leaders, faculty and staff.

There are also meet-and-greet events sponsored by numerous colleges and groups and various other activities throughout the early days of classes. Find the complete Saluki Startup schedule of events at wow.siu.edu/saluki-startup. For more information about any of the events, email orientation@siu.edu or call 618-453-1000.

Welcoming one and all with events galore

At SIU, the “welcome back” vibe continues with a variety of diverse activities during five Weeks of Welcome, or WOW, as it is called it on campus. Highlights of the fall schedule include some very special guests you’ll want to see.

SIU will celebrate Diversity Week during this time. Juan Manual “John” Quiñones, ABC News correspondent/journalist and longtime host of “What Would You Do?,” will speak during the kickoff on Aug. 29. The diversity commemoration from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 will also feature a discussion of military culture, a disability support and accessibility presentation, jazz ensemble, a Women’s Equality Day celebration and a jazz and hip-hop seminar, mural painting, SAFE Zone and DACA training and more. The full schedule will be available online when finalized.

You can also “Meet Kevin and Oscar from ‘The Office’” in the Student Center Ballrooms at 6 p.m. Sept. 22.  Oscar Martinez and Kevin Malone, portrayed by Oscar Nuñez and Brian Baumgartner, will share about their time on the NBC Emmy-winning series “The Office.” Students and the general public are welcome to attend the free presentation; no tickets are required and admission is on a first-come basis. A book signing will follow, and some fortunate guests will have the opportunity to meet the pair at a reception following the moderated event.

Other Week of Welcome activities include open houses, an involvement fair, movies, a job fair, a bonfire, barbecue, workshops, student organization events, and a free Family Carnival at the Student Recreation Center’s west gym from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 27 featuring a bounce house, games, snacks and more. Geared toward non-traditional families, the event is designed to help them learn about campus and the community and connect with resources and other people.

Weeks of Welcome will wrap up with Saluki Family Weekend, Sept. 23-25, featuring a craft sale, Greek Sing, and other activities, including the the football Salukis hosting North Dakota in gridiron action.

BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who won the gold medal in the javelin throw event of the Commonwealth Games, on the occasion wished India’s Neeraj Chopra well after he was unable to make it to the competition due to injury.

Speaking to Geo News shortly after bagging the medal, Nadeem said: “Neeraj Chopra was unable to attend the event this time due to injury. I wish him good luck in the upcoming competitions. May God grant him health. If he had been here, it would have been all the more fun.”

Although rivals on the playing field and by virtue of their nationalities, the camaraderie between the two athletes is well documented. They have encouraged and praised each other on multiple occasions and with their bromance have become quite the media darlings of both countries.

Nadeem on Sunday became the first javelin thrower from the sub-continent to cross the 90 metre mark to win the gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Nadeem, who regularly competes with Chopra, a Tokyo Olympics gold medallist, came up with a personal best of 90.18m in his fifth throw.

“I thank Allah and my parents who prayed for me and the Pakistani nation who stayed up and prayed for me. Alhamdulliah, God has granted me a medal and I am very happy,” he told Geo News.

Nadeem said that he did not want to let down his fans who had been cheering him on to finally win a gold. “I had come with the hope that I will win a gold medal for my fans and so with their prayers, I have won it.”

The athlete, commenting on his injuries and how he had managed to participate in spite of them, said: “I had elbow and knee injuries and Alhamdulillah [but the doctors] really worked on me, my injury.”

He also thanked the Pakistan Sports Board and the Punjab Sports for facilitating his participation.

Growing up in Vancouver, Junny is now one of the most in-demand soloists. Since his debut in 2017, Junny has garnered attention for his artistry, lyricism, and unique vocal colour.

Named after his upcoming album “blanc”, the tour will reflect Junny’s diverse music style, from the upbeat track “Color Me‘, to the suave atmospheric tunes of “Get Ya!

The soloist explained the title “blanc” as a metaphor for his experience — looking back at life, the singer always felt like a blank canvas, coloured by people who are around and inspire him every day.

Here are three upcoming events that combine food, art and fun!

Peak City Pig Fest

If you love everything to do with pork and succulent meat in general, you won’t want to miss the Peak City Pig Fest. Held in nearby Apex, this festival is all about barbecue and just about anything else you can make out of a pig.

Every year, 42 cooking teams come together and compete for the grand prize of $12,000. They do this by cooking their very best pork along with other types of meat such as beef and chicken. As you can imagine, with so many people cooking at once, there will be no shortage of delicious food to eat.

The festival runs from July 22 to July 23 and is located at the downtown Apex.

In addition to food, there will be live music and a beer garden.

Summer in North Carolina

Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival

If you’re a fan of the arts and love festivals in general, the Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival is the place to be in late August. You can find this festival in Cary on Aug. 27 and 28.

This event has been attracting more than 300 artists from 16 states across the country each year.

There are craft shows and tents full of art that you won’t be able to find in your average museum. And, of course, there is always plenty of food. The food is usually dispensed from many colorful and unique food trucks, so when you get a bit tired of all the commotion of the festival, you can take a break and hang around these trucks for some delicious festival food.

Mount Moriah At the Cat's Cradle

Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival

Another event that features lots of food – Beer, Bourbon and BBQ at the Koka Booth Amphitheater. The event is Aug. 5-6 and features lots of samples! Plus, there is always live music and games.
