Here’s what Vancouver’s free floral ‘Femme’ event dedicated to ‘significant women’ will look like

Say it with flowers: This free Vancouver event will celebrate fierce, famous females in floral form

There’ll be 15 mannequins along with other displays.

Fleur de Villes is returning to Vancouver for a female-focused floral function.

For 10 days starting June 3 public spaces in Vancouver’s downtown will be blooming brilliantly with 15 mannequins placed about the core with features familiar to many. The show, dubbed FEMMES, celebrates remarkable women with mannequins decorated like them.

That means famed locals like Sarah MacLachlan, Shaylan Stone Child, and Emily Carr will be featured. Former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson will also be featured. For those looking to learn more about each of the women, a QR code and images will provide a profile on each woman.

Along with the 15 mannequins, the show will have several other components, like a “flower-bombed” 1957 MGA Roadster, a floral swing and a pop-up flower market. Some restaurants, like 1931 Gallery Bistro, will be serving related foods and drinks, as well.

“Each of our shows is an entirely different experience, celebrating the local community and made possible by local partners like the DVBIA which support Fleurs de Villes events being freely and most beautifully open to the public,” says co-founder Karen Marshall in a press release.

While Fleur de Villes is based in Vancouver, they’ve held shows around the world; versions of FEMME have popped up in Miami, Chicago and Toronto.

The Cup (formerly known as The Deighton Cup) is making a comeback to Hastings Racecourse July 23! After a two-year hiatus, the city’s most fashionable event of the summer is set to attract both local and international guests for a day filled with the finest fascinators and silk bow ties, live music, local art, the best food and craft cocktails, as well as some rousing derby action.

Known for pushing the fashion envelope with its Style Stakes competition, this year The Cup has partnered with Orbiiit to crown the festival’s best-dressed with the biggest prize yet. The Style Stakes winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize and the honour of becoming a judge at next year’s event. The competition is also sponsored by local fine fashion brands Surmesur, Capelleria Bertacchi and Mine & Yours Luxury Resale. All attendees will have the opportunity to capture their look at the Style Stakes Portrait Studio and enter to win the grand prize.

The annual event will take over the entire race track at Hastings Racecourse this year. With the additional space, Trackside VIP Chalets will be available offering the ultimate hosted experience for fans who love front and centre action. The Chalets will be catered with a custom, curated menu by Vancouver’s Cocktails & Canapés and offer the perfect opportunity for companies looking to celebrate their staff this season. The Cup’s notoriously popular Trackside VIP booths, which consistently sell out each year, will be catered by Blank Canvas Catering and hospitality industry powerhouse Joseph Richard Group.

“We are so excited to be bringing back The Cup this summer,” says event organizer, Dax Droski of Parade Agency. “Seeing the city come back to life and celebrate in grand style has inspired us to deliver the best day at the races yet. Show off your personal style and have fun with it. Of course, the food, champagne and thundering horses are always the perfect backdrop.”

The Cup will also host special pop-ups to suit the occasion including a mid-century modern Cigar Lounge pouring Alfred Giraud Whisky, and a Mint Julep Experience that will feature four different bourbons with drinks crafted by four local restaurants led by The Cup Cocktail Director Alex Black. One of Vancouver’s coolest wine events returns this spring

One of Vancouver's coolest wine events returns this spring

Want to really impress your friends the next time you get together and uncork some wine?

Want to really impress your friends the next time you get together and uncork some wine? You can get a taste of some of the most exciting sustainably-farmed, handcrafted wines on the market at Vancouver’s coolest wine event, Top Drop, which returns for two nights this month.

Top Drop takes place May 11 and 12 at the Yaletown Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre and will feature nearly 40 wineries from around the world with representatives pouring tastes and sharing knowledge about their terroir-focused wines.

For its return in 2022, Top Drop Vancouver’s impressive roster of participants includes wineries from California’s Napa Valley, Italy’s Barolo, and France’s iconic Champagne – not to mention several stars from B.C.’s own wine-making industry.

The event, which launched in 2014, is a more boutique experience for wine pros and enthusiasts keen to learn about the latest in naturally chic wine-making. Top Drop was co-founded by Vancouver sommelier Kurtis Kolt and Jeff Curry, who has a wine importing company called the Wine Syndicate. They work with a very small team of key trade to produce the event, explains Kolt, who adds that participating wineries are chosen by a selection committee of highly-touted local sommeliers and retailers.

Fall in love with something you try at the event? An onsite wine shop is stocking what the wineries are pouring.

Event proceeds go to the BC Hospitality Foundation, an organization providing financial support to individuals from the hospitality industry facing a major medical crisis.

Vancouver’s first NFT convention-style event is happening in May

Vancouver's first NFT convention-style event is happening in May

There will be panel discussions with top NFT artists, a networking party, and local digital art display.

No matter who or where you are in Vancouver, the term ‘NFT’ has most likely come up in conversation.

NFT get-togethers and parties are scattered throughout the city, but what about a massive convention-style event?

Vancouver’s first large-scale NFT event is happening May 1 and will bring together the growing NFT community in Vancouver under one roof.

The NFT BC Panel and Party is taking place at the Hollywood Theatre with a capacity of approximately 574 people and organizer Jonathan Simkin, president of 604 Records and founder of Simkin Artist Management, predicts that it will sell out fast. “We’re well over 300 [tickets] sold plus a guest list that’s over 100 [people] at this point. So, based on my experience with events, it will sell out,” says Simkin.

The night starts with “Three or four panels with some of the top editing artists and other people in the space,” he explains. The panel discussions will feature some artists represented by Simkin Artist Management and will end with a local artwork display, networking, and music.

Some NFT artists present at the event include Mad Dog Jones, FVCKRENDER, and Carmilla Sumantry.

“The idea was to bring together the community,” says Simkin. “We could tell that there were a lot of people doing things in this community, but it seemed very disconnected and disjointed.” He hopes that an event like this will invigorate the NFT scene and keep it vibrant in the city.

The idea for a large-scale event started when Simkin attended a client’s “very informal” NFT party. “I was shocked by how many people were there,” he says. “It absolutely blew my mind. That’s sort of the genesis of the [NFT BC event]. [We realized] there’s a lot of people interested in this space in Vancouver.”

There may be a possibility of another NFT event in the future, though Simkin is just glad that there’s interest. “If this turns into a regular event- great! If it doesn’t- great!”

NFT BC

When: May 1 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Where: Hollywood Theatre – 3123 W Broadway

Cost: $23

Vancouver’s 4/20 event returns to Art Gallery location Wednesday | Globalnews.ca

Vancouver’s 4/20 event returns to Art Gallery location Wednesday | Globalnews.ca

Vancouver’s annual 4/20 event will be held Wednesday at its original downtown location but new organizers will be running it.

A group called the 4/20 Market has come together to plan its own event at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Cannacurious: What we really know about cannabis

These organizers say they need to protest against the Canadian government, saying they believe cannabis has become too expensive for B.C.’s most vulnerable population.

The organizers told Global News they see this event as an opportunity to speak up.

Annual Vancouver 4/20 event moves online – Apr 20, 2020

“It’s a protest just like every year,” Adilynn McArdle, one of the event organizers said.

Story continues below advertisement

“(The) Supreme Court of Canada says every Canadian citizen deserves reasonable access to cannabis and unfortunately our federal government hasn’t yet given us reasonable access. While they’ve legalized it, they’ve kind of locked out all of the people who were standing up in the first place.”

The previous organizers, who shifted the event to the Sunset Beach location, say they were unable to organize their annual April event because COVID-19 regulations were not lifted in time.

Where to hold Vancouver’s annual 4/20 event in the future?

The return of 4/20 is certain to reignite the heated annual debate over whether the event is a protest or an unlicensed festival.

According to a leaked memo from Vancouver city staff, the 2018 event cost taxpayers more than $583,000.

The now-28-year-old event has grown to attract tens of thousands of attendees and high-profile musical acts like Cypress Hill, who performed at Sunset Beach in 2019.

Vancouver’s 2022 wine festival will feature 101 wineries from 14 countries pouring at 27 events

Vancouver's 2022 wine festival will feature 101 wineries from 14 countries pouring at 27 events

🍷 So much wine, so little time… (Just kidding, it’s a week-long event!) 🍷

The 43rd annual Vancouver International Wine Festival is set to take place this May, and this year’s exciting in-person lineup features an impressive 101 wineries from 41 countries across the globe pouring at 27 events over the course of one very full week.

British Columbian wineries have the most prominent showing – of course! – but there will be 18 producers from Italy, 14 from the United States, as well as several from popular wine-producing regions in Spain, Australia, and Argentina. And for the first time ever, the nation of Georgia will have a winery headed to Vancouver for the festival.

The VIWF is primarily based out of the Vancouver Convention Centre, but venues across the city, including restaurants, will host a multitude of ticketed events as part of the celebration. Those events include tastings, seminars, dinners, and the epic Bacchanalia Gala Dinner + Auction (benefiting Bard on the Beach) will take place on Tuesday, May 17 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

The heart of the festival is the Tasting Room, where all 101 wineries will gather for four International Festival Tastings (and two Trade Tastings).

Tickets for the International Festival Tastings (May 19-21) and the Super Pass are now on sale, while tickets for public events (including seminars, winery dinners, minglers and lunches) will go on sale Wednesday, April 6 at 9:30 a.m. Find all ticketing info on the VIWF site

Vancouver’s annual celebration of B.C. spirits resumes in 2022

Vancouver's annual celebration of B.C. spirits resumes in 2022

It’s time to raise our glasses again after a two-year pause.

It’s once again time to raise our collective glasses to the best of British Columbia-made spirits, as BC Distilled returns this spring after its two-year “pandemic pause.”

The festival will take place over several days in early April, culminating in the signature tasting event, with two sessions, on April 9.

“We are overjoyed to be returning after two years off. The event will be a little smaller, a little quieter, with several new distilleries and lots of new spirits for people to try,” stated Alex Hamer, the festival’s founder. “BC Distilled brings together our province’s great community of distillers and spirit fans, and I know we’re all looking forward to getting together after this long break.”

The first opportunity to get together at BC Distilled will be April 6 for a B.C. Whisky Tasting, hosted by writer and Canadian whisky expert Davin de Kergommeaux, and held at Copperpenny Distillery in North Vancouver. Next, the popular Distillers Dinner returns to Vancouver’s acclaimed Forage restaurant on April 8. Forage Executive Chef Welbert Choi will feature five cocktail and spirit samples from B.C. distilleries, paired with five terroir-based courses. An optional cocktail reception preceding the dinner will take place next door at Forage’s sibling spot BeSide, with a sixth distillery providing cocktails.

The main draw, however, is the tasting sessions. There will be two ticketed public tasting sessions on April 9; an afternoon option from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and an evening tasting from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Both BC Distilled public tastings take place at the Croatian Cultural Centre at 3250 Commercial Drive in Vancouver.

In addition to some beloved returning participants, the 2022 BC Distilled event will feature some first-timers.

Sneaker Con: Vancouver’s biggest event for sneakerheads returns in 2022

Sneaker Con: Vancouver's biggest event for sneakerheads returns in 2022

Before winter ends, sneakerheads of B.C. will get to indulge their souls (and soles) at an in-person event.

The travelling shoe show Sneaker Con is back in the Lower Mainland March 5, after being absent in 2021.

“Sneaker Con is trekking back to the Alps of Vancouver and we’re bringing all the heat!” say organizers online.

It would seem the “Alps of Vancouver” would be the Vancouver Convention Centre, as that’s where it’ll be happening.

Sneaker Con is one of the bigger events in the sports shoe collection world (they have 3.2 million followers on Instagram); the event travels to cities around North America, often with stops elsewhere, each year.

While Vancouver is often a destination, there was no 2021 event due to the pandemic. The 2020 show arrived just before the pandemic, taking place in late February.

While shoe sales will be central to the convention, there will also be an authentication booth set up by eBay (the event’s major sponsor) to check over shoes and give them their stamp of approval.

“There will be plenty of sneaker giveaways and live auctions going down throughout the day,” promise organizers.

Along with sneakers of all sorts, there will be other pop culture paraphernalia around, as well.

It’ll be an all-day event, with doors opening at noon and closing at 7 p.m. Tickets are $36.83 after fees.
