Close sticky video

Article content

There are multiple special events scheduled for the Seniors on the Bow seniors centre this week, one social and another of a more serious nature.

Article content

The monthly hot lunch is scheduled for April 22 beginning at 12:30. The centre’s talented volunteer chefs are preparing barbecued pork tenderloin, baked potato, salad and pineapple delight.

It’s a popular social occasion, complete with a cash bar. Members can enjoy the meal for $6, but non-members are welcome too for $8.

On April 29, there’s a full-day ‘emergency first aid’ course being held at the centre, funded through the FCSS/United Way grant program. Because this one has limited space it’s just for members, and Seniors on the Bow will need to confirm numbers by April 20.

There are recurring activities for each day of the week. Some of the more popular ones run twice weekly.

There are sessions for various table games including bridge, whist, crib, mah-jongg and euchre. There’s more active scheduled activities like carpet bowing, yoga, qigong, floor shuffleboard, pool, chair fitness, belly dancing and line dancing.

Other groups include the monthly book club (they’re reading The Personal Librarian in April) and the Needle Arts and Engaging Men groups.

The 2021 action-comedy Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds is set to be the next ‘Monday Movie’ on the centre’s projector setup on April 25. It’ll start at 1:15, and there’s popcorn too: it’s free for members, and $3 for non-members.

A January-December membership to the centre is $30, with a ‘drop-in’ fee of $2 for members or $3 for non-members (which includes coffee and volunteer-baked goodies, plus a comfortable place to relax). The centre is located on the second floor of the SLS Family Sports Centre, accessible by the COLT transit system or the Rocky View Regional Handibus Society.

The full monthly calendar is available on the ‘Seniors on the Bow’ section of Cochrane.ca. Alternatively, reception can offer more information on programming, volunteering and membership during regular hours at 403-932-6002.

UM Celebrating Earth Day With Variety of Events April 18-23 – The University of Montevallo

UM Celebrating Earth Day With Variety of Events April 18-23 - The University of Montevallo

The University of Montevallo is celebrating Earth Day 2022 with a wide variety of events both before and after the April 21 Earth Fest – UM’s celebration of earthen festivities.

“We’ve invited dozens of organizations who will bring information about what they do, like the local river keepers and Oak Mountain State Park,” said Dr. Susan Caplow, associate professor of environmental studies. “The students have really stepped up this year to help with all the planning and execution of these events, and they’ll be doing environmental crafts. We’ll have live music and one band featuring a professor in the music department, AJ Covey, who does percussion.”

“This is the first time we’re bringing food trucks. Earth Fest will be after school so people can come and enjoy it. The point of it is not to focus on all the ways we’re hurting Mother Nature, but the ways we can celebrate nature.”

“It’s just a fun, positive, happy event.”

All events are open to the public.

The festivities kick off with a clothing swap to prevent waste on April 18. From 3-6 p.m. at Anna Irvin Dining Hall, clothes can be dropped off or freely taken.

On April 19, from 9-11 a.m. at the UM Organic Community Garden, Montevallo students are invited to get their hands dirty by helping plant the summer garden. Tools and instructions will be provided.

ValloCycle Glow Ride will lead a 45-minute group bicycle ride from University of Montevallo on Main to La Conchita Bakery for people of all skill levels and ages on April 20 starting at 5:30 p.m. Paletas – popsicles – will be provided. Bicycles can be borrowed for the ride by emailing vallocycle@gmail.com.

April 21 is Earth Fest, which starts at 3 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. on UM’s Main Quad. There will be live music, food trucks, earth-focused crafts, a chalk art competition between campus organizations and more. If it rains, Earth Fest will be held at the Student Activity Center.

On April 22, everyone is invited to help pick up litter in the Main Street district. The meet up will be at the University of Montevallo on Main at 1 p.m. The litter cleanup will end at 3 p.m. Cleanup materials will be provided. If it rains, the event will be moved to April 23 at the same place, same times.

The final day of UM’s Earth Fest activities is on April 23. ValloCycle will host a Drop-In Bike Maintenance Clinic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Strand Coffeehouse. The community is invited to bring their bikes and learn how to maintain them.

EYE ON THE ARTS: Spring brings variety of arts events

EYE ON THE ARTS: Spring brings variety of arts events

The Miller Beach Arts & Creative District is currently hosting “Searching for Balance in Chaos,” an exhibit featuring the work of artists Teresina Pavel and Patty Roberts, at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts through April 29. While each of the artists takes a different direction, one leaning toward abstraction and the other toward surrealism, the work of both is inspired by nature and vivid with color. Despite their individual approaches, the artists agree that the purpose of art and creativity is to bring order and beauty to the uncertainties of life. Stop by and meet the artists at their opening reception on April 1 or an Artist Talk on April 3. https://millerbeacharts.org/

Nestled in the heart of the Indiana Dunes National Park in Beverly Shores is a historic train station built in 1929. Designed in the Mediterranean Spanish style, and once home to the Station Master, the Beverly Shores Depot Museum & Art Gallery is now preserving local history while celebrating the arts. Located at 525 South Broadway along Route 12, the building is the single remaining South Shore station of its kind and continues to attract visitors and commuters with half of the building serving as a train station and the other half as the town’s history museum, regional art gallery, and gift shop. Hosting exhibitions featuring work created by regional artists from May through October, the Depot has issued a call to artists to participate in “The 5×5 Show Turns 5.” To participate in this year’s exhibit, the first in-person one since 2019, artists must donate a 5”x5” work of art to be displayed during the run of the show. 5”x5” canvases and/or frames are available at no charge for pick up, and the deadline to submit is May 2. For participation details and a list of FAQs, visit wwwibsdepot.com or contact sales@bsdepot.com

Parksville Community Centre Society acquires facility to be used for variety of events – Parksville Qualicum Beach News

Parksville Community Centre Society acquires facility to be used for variety of events - Parksville Qualicum Beach News

The Parksville Community Centre Society (PCCS) has announced it is back in operation, following a 15-month hiatus.

A release issued by the organization read the PCCS will host a broad range of events, including business meetings, trade shows, educational seminars, sporting events, club gatherings, cultural events and concerts in Parksville starting in March.

According to the release, the PCCS board of directors, comprised of a group of community leaders who volunteer their time, have acquired the facilities at 223 Mills St. to be used as a new community centre.

“The board’s mandate is to ensure the centre continues to drive social and economic activity within the local community and encourage participation from all sectors, public, private, business and government,” read the release.

“As it is well known in the Parksville area, the PCCS no longer operates the facility at 132 Jensen Ave. as a result of the lease agreement not being renewed by Mayor Mayne and Parksville council on Jan. 1, 2021. The 223 Mills St. facility will make available six large rooms, between 600 and 850 square feet, which can be rented individually or together. There will also be available eight smaller offices that will be available for hourly, daily, weekly or monthly rentals.”

According to the release, the facility will take time to be cleaned and prepared before it is ready to welcome Parksville residents. The organization would like to invite community members to volunteer their services and help with preparations, including cleaning up the new centre.

“We know this will happen because many Parksville citizens and local businesses came together in 1948, and in 2001, volunteering time and donating funds to create the previous two centres. And we hope you will join us once again to show your Parksville pride so we can once again provide a community gathering space.”

General inquiries to the PCCS can be emailed to: Info@ParksvilleCentre.ca. Board-related matters or inquires can be emailed to: Board@ParksvilleCentre.ca.
