Glenville, W. Va. – After featuring the field athletes heavily on day one, it was the track athletes turn to take the course on day two of the 2022 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Wheeling Women’s Track & Field team had a big showing, sending eight athletes to the finals of their events while the field and multis finished up their championships.
After the multis and field events starting the day, the track qualifiers began at 4:30 PM and the Cardinals got started on a strong note. Isha Sesay posted the top time in the 100-Meter Hurdles Qualifier at 14.76 second and she will be joined by teammate Jenay Soumahro, who finished fifth at 15.45 seconds. When they took the hurdles away, the Cardinals sent their third athlete to the finals as Ka’Niya McGowan finished third with a time of 12.22 seconds. The distance runners were up next and Caroline Fodor set the pace in the 800-Meter, running a 2:24.72 to lead the field by more than three seconds. Wheeling qualified the most runners in the Women’s 400-Meter Hurdles with three athletes qualifying.
Jenay Soumahro, who is the defending MEC Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week, won the Qualifier with a time of 64.63 seconds. Keala McCurry, who won the MEC Outdoor Pole Vault Championship, also qualified with a time of 70.09 seconds and Bre’ya Clopper made it in the number six spot with a time of 72.12 seconds. The final track event of the day was the 200-Meter Dash, and McGowan would qualify for her second finals of the championship event. She finished third in the Qualifier with a time of 25.21 seconds and earn a spot in the finals. Head Coach Patrick Stanton talked about the importance of flooding the finals and these athletes will represent the Cardinals on the final day of competition.
Before the track events got started, the multis finished up there event as Liz Salas competed in the Women’s Heptathlon. She finished seventh overall with 2868 points and had her best event on day two. She finished second in the group in the Women’s shot put, with a distance of 9.24 meters in the first event of day two. After the multis, the field events finished up with the best performance coming in the Women’s High Jump. Tara Perry finished second in the field, jumping 1.59 meters In her first championship event. Kamille Graham and the throwers closed out the Field competition in the shot put and discus. Graham took home eighth in the discus (30.58 meters) and sixth in the shotput (10.41 meters. Liz Salas was the final competitor for Wheeling, and placed 9th throwing 10.41 meters.
The 2022 MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships wrap up on Wednesday with the finals of the Track events beginning at 12:30 PM.
