Center For Sexual & Gender Diversity To Host Events Throughout Fall Semester

Center For Sexual & Gender Diversity To Host Events Throughout Fall Semester

Penn State’s Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) will host a variety of events this fall, with topics including pronouns, sexuality, and empowerment.

The first event is “Game Time” beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, in the HUB. That’ll be one of two events to take place in September.

The two events in September will be followed up with four in October, which is LGBTQ+ History Month, and three in November, which is Transgender Awareness Month.

The CSGD strives to create an inclusive environment where students, faculty, staff, and alumni can all feel supported. Within the CSGD, Penn Staters everywhere are able to access support, connect with others, and expand their knowledge on gender and sexual diversity.

Additionally, the CSGD has resources that span many different communities, including those who identify as queer and transgender and those who belong to the Commonwealth Campuses.

In honor of LGBTQ+ History Month in October and Transgender Awareness Month in November, the CSGD will host various speakers so students can learn more from members of their respective communities.

Potential locations chosen for Panama City Performing Arts and Events Center

Potential locations chosen for Panama City Performing Arts and Events Center

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – The City of Panama City held a public workshop Thursday to discuss potential locations for a new performing arts and events center.

The project is set to replace the original Marina Civic Center which was destroyed in Hurricane Michael. Locals packed the Panama City Center for the Arts Thursday evening to meet with city leaders and provide input on their ideal location for the events center. The city’s project team spoke about the process of selecting a location and discussed the factors that went into the decision. These included financial factors, technical factors such as noise and zoning, and project requirements such as open space and sustainability.

Ultimately, the team has narrowed it down to just a handful of locations.

“Of the 13 sites they now have narrowed it down to two sites. One being at the Panama City Marina, in the vicinity of where the current civic center is after we tear that down. And then the other one would be the parcel immediately behind the city hall,” Panama City Manager Mark McQueen said.

City officials stressed the importance of community involvement in this project. An extensive question and answer session took place, in which a handful of attendees expressed concerns with the potential size and location of the new project. Some argued that a venue of this scale would be better suited for a location outside of the city, where things like traffic would be less of an issue. Others believed the proposed locations were necessary to sustain the tourism industry downtown.

”From a logistics standpoint, if we built a new performing arts and events center out of downtown, we would have a repeat of when the mall was built in the seventies and we would have a vacuum sucking the business and the life out of downtown and we would be squishing the efforts that have been made out of the last five or ten years to revitalize the area,” Panama City Resident Ethan Brown said.

Officials hope to make a final decision on the location in August. They will then enter phase 2 of the process which includes selecting a company to design the new performing arts and events center. Then, construction will begin. If things go smoothly, McQueen said the entire process should take around four and a half years.

Peak City Pig Fest

If you love everything to do with pork and succulent meat in general, you won’t want to miss the Peak City Pig Fest. Held in nearby Apex, this festival is all about barbecue and just about anything else you can make out of a pig.

Every year, 42 cooking teams come together and compete for the grand prize of $12,000. They do this by cooking their very best pork along with other types of meat such as beef and chicken. As you can imagine, with so many people cooking at once, there will be no shortage of delicious food to eat.

The festival runs from July 22 to July 23 and is located at the downtown Apex.

In addition to food, there will be live music and a beer garden.

$80M sports and events center proposed in town of Watertown

$80M sports and events center proposed in town of Watertown

TOWN OF WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – A more than 500,000-square-foot sports and events center could be coming to Watertown.

Everything from basketball and volleyball to track and ice hockey. The proposed $80 million facility is aiming to be a major draw for sporting events in upstate New York.

Renderings are out for the Thousand Islands Event Center. Town of Watertown Supervisor Joel Bartlett is heading the project with the Thousand Islands Local Development Corporation along with other architects and developers.

It would be 520,000-square-feet, and include 8 basketball courts, an indoor track, 2 hockey rinks, and 16 volleyball courts. That goes along with 3 outdoor turf fields and 2 indoor fields for sports like lacrosse.

Plus, there would be a multi-purpose arena seating up to 9,000 people. The proposal also calls for two ice rinks with arena seating of up to 3,000 people.

This is a project that’s been talked about for years. What’s new now? The size of the project. It’s about 3 times the size of a 2018 plan both in scale of the facility, and cost.

The T.I.L.D.C. says there is no modern, large-scale sports and special events center in the Thousand Islands region, forcing families to drive hours to other facilities.

The facility would be on Route 3 in the town of Watertown by the agricultural business park. The goal is to attract people to Watertown from across upstate New York and Canada.

Fifty jobs would be created.

The projections call for 250 event days annually, bringing in more than 93,000 new visitors to the area. The T.I.L.D.C. believes that would generate about $24 million in additional spending from those visitors.

Where will the $80 million come from for the project? Officials say $35 million will be from taxable bonds, $15 million will come from private equity, and the T.I.L.D.C is trying to secure the remaining $30 million from the state.

We reached out to officials at the governor’s office, but they declined to comment on the project.

Supervisor Bartlett was not available for comment as well.

We’re still working to learn whether the T.I.L.D.C. will be able to secure that $30 million in state funding.
