Events for Pope Francis in Quebec City pushed back due to flight delays

Pope Francis is continuing his pilgrimage of penance in Canada with a visit to Quebec City.

A plane carrying the Pope left Edmonton Wednesday and is headed east for the next leg of his reconciliation visit.

However, the event at the Citadelle de Québec has been pushed back an hour due to a delay involving a flight carrying Indigenous leaders.

Organizers say the event is now scheduled to begin at 4:40 p.m. and the Pope’s tour of the Plains of Abraham will be pushed back to 6:15 p.m.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops reports that the Pope plans to listen to and speak with representatives of different Indigenous communities to address the impacts of colonization and the Roman Catholic Church’s involvement in the residential school system.

The visit is also supposed to be an opportunity to connect with the Catholic community in Canada.

The Pope is scheduled to first meet with government officials and deliver a public address on the Plains of Abraham.

Thursday, he will go to the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica, where he will celebrate mass at 10 a.m.

Between 10,000 and 15,000 people are expected to attend, with space for guests inside and outside the basilica.

The mass will also be broadcasted on the Plains of Abraham.

Later in the afternoon, the Pope is slated to go to the Cathédrale-Basilique Notre-Dame de Québec to meet with bishops, priests, deacons, seminarians and more.

Friday, Pope Francis is expected to have a private meeting at 9 a.m. with members of the Jésus à l’Archevêché de Québec.

At 10:45 a.m., he will meet with a delegation of Indigenous people from eastern Canada — his last activity in Quebec City.

His plane is expected to leave Jean-Lesage International Airport at 12:45 p.m. and land at 3:50 p.m. at Iqaluit International Airport in Nunavut.

At 4:15 p.m., the Pope will meet with former students of residential schools in Iqaluit before participating in a public event presented by the Inuit community.

A departure ceremony for the Pope is slated to take place at 6:15 p.m. at the Iqaluit Airport, ending his stay in Canada as he heads back to the Vatican.

Excessive heat delays, cancels outdoor events in North Texas due to safety

Excessive heat delays, cancels outdoor events in North Texas due to safety

The near-record temperatures across North Texas are forcing the organizers of some outdoor events to either delay or outright cancel the events because of safety concerns.

Scorching temperatures across the metroplex prompted the National Weather Service to issue an excessive heat warning Thursday continuing at least through Saturday.

With highs over 105 and heat indexes over 110, the extreme heat is a top concern for those in charge of putting on various outdoor events this weekend.

Megan Gordon with the city of Irving says she decided to delay the start of Friday’s outdoor movie night at Heritage Park out of concern for the safety of attendees.

“As the event planner, I thought about it three days ago. But we always try our best to accommodate rather than cancel,” she said. “The event was originally planned for 6:30 p.m. As soon as we saw that heat advisory coming our way, we said let’s push it back when the sun sets a little bit so move it to 8 p.m.”

Typically, crowds can get up to 350. It was much smaller Friday.

Mom Sheniece Perkins admits she had second thoughts when she arrived.

“It’s for the kids, so I got to suck it up. They run around in the heat all of the time,” she said.

But families in Carrollton aren’t so lucky. The city announced Friday that this week’s Christmas in July event downtown would be canceled with no plans to reschedule.

“It’s probably a bummer for whatever kids were looking forward to it,” he said. “I wasn’t planning on coming, but I think it’s kind of sad for the community, but I can understand why. Safety.”

Weather delays 2nd run of men’s giant slalom

Weather delays 2nd run of men's giant slalom

The second run of the Olympic men’s giant slalom has been postponed amid heavy snowfall and low visibility at the Yanqing Alpine Skiing Center.

Marco Odermatt of Switzerland has a lead of 0.04 seconds over Stefan Brennsteiner of Austria and 0.08 over world champion Mathieu Faivre of France after the first run.

It is the first time snow has fallen during an Alpine skiing race at the Beijing Olympics.

Snow has been falling since Saturday at the Yanqing Alpine Skiing Center, where athletes had been racing and training on artificial snow. A second women’s downhill training run scheduled for Sunday was canceled.

The skiers said it is tough to see but good enough to race in.

Fourth-placed Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway said, “The light is more than skiable,” but added, “It just makes it difficult.”

Earlier, the second women’s downhill training run for American racer Mikaela Shiffrin, Italy’s Sofia Goggia and other Alpine skiers also was canceled because of snowfall.

A downhill race has faster speeds than the giant slalom and so is more dangerous to ski when visibility is poor.

Snow began falling Saturday at the Yanqing Alpine Skiing Center during the first women’s downhill practice session and continued into Sunday morning.

There is another downhill training scheduled for Monday, ahead of Tuesday’s race.
