Los Gatos police release slate of ‘community engagement’ events

In an effort to boost relationships with the community, the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department is hosting a series of community policing initiatives throughout 2022.

The department announced last week that it will offer events like Coffee with a Cop, Walk with a Cop and the Community Police Academy to interact more with the community in “non-crisis situations.”

The first of these events, Coffee with a Cop, was set for May 3 at the Los Gatos Civic Center, where residents could meet with police officers over coffee to discuss interests, concerns and public safety insights.

Community policing is “a framework for establishing trust, exchange of information and transparency, and a positive engagement between law enforcement and the community,” the department said.

Police departments across the country are facing lack of trust from their communities. A 2021 national Gallup poll showed about 27% of Black Americans and 56% of White Americans had confidence in the police. These numbers are up from 2020’s record-low confidence rating of 48% among all Americans, marking the first time in Gallup’s 27-year history that confidence dipped below 50%.

Police Chief Jamie Field took over the department amid a dispatcher shortage and several officer retirements earlier this year. She said in January that one of her top priorities as chief would be community engagement.

The department also has two golden labradoodles, Gary and JJ, for its Therapy Canine Program. The dogs promote wellness in the department, are a resource for officers and assist in the response and treatment of trauma and mental health, as well as community outreach and engagement.

The dogs will be out at several community events this year, including a session on May 16 at Venture School.

The department will offer its first classroom-style Community Police Academy this fall for residents in Los Gatos and Monte Sereno, who can participate in presentations and demonstrations to learn more about the department.

Topics include patrol operations, laws of arrest, investigations, records processing, traffic law, communications, defensive tactics and de-escalation and supportive services. The goal is to increase education and understanding between the community and the department.

May through October, the department will host Walk with a Cop, which is modeled after the nationwide program to bring the police and community together in non-crisis situations.

“By walking through a neighborhood with community members, an officer can truly see the neighborhoods and business districts they protect and serve through the eyes and experiences of the community,” the department said in a press release. Any resident can sign up for a walk with a police officer online.

Winning artworks in the Greater Bay Area Open are up at New Museum Los Gatos through March 12. The theme of the juried exhibit is “Listen, Learn, Change, Grow,” matching the title of a recent campaign launched by the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce. In another contest, Marianne Hamilton, a dedicated Los Gatos volunteer and a longtime contributor to the Los Gatos Weekly Times, has been named Ms. Senior Universe 2022. No bathing suit competition here; this pageant celebrates women over 60 who are actively giving back to their communities.

“I’ll be 70 this year, and after a bout with breast cancer in 2020, I’m delighted by the notion of hitting that milestone,” says Hamilton, who joins others in “a refusal to accept that age dictates boundaries.”

Los Gatos maker Christan Mercurio is set to sell his wares at the Saratoga Rotary Art Show will be back again April 30-May 1.

Spring seems to be springing earlier this year. A victim of the pandemic, the wildly popular Master Gardener’s Spring Garden Market will not be held. Santa Clara County Master Gardeners, organizers of the event, say they “hope to return with a full event in 2023.”

No known threats targeting Super Bowl events in Los Angeles area this weekend, authorities say

LOS ANGELES (AP) — There are no known security threats to the Super Bowl, authorities said Tuesday as they outlined the coordinated law-enforcement effort to keep the game at SoFi Stadium and the Los Angeles region safe.

Fans attending the game can expect an enormous police presence at the stadium, which will have a tightly monitored security perimeter. Meanwhile patrol officers, tactical teams, K-9 units and paramedics will be been deployed across Los Angeles County in the run-up to the NFL championship game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said at least 500 members of his department are devoted to safety for the big game, including agents focused on ferreting out cyberthreats and preventing human trafficking.

“We have no information of a specific, credible threat against the Super Bowl,” said Mayorkas. “What this is all about is planning and preparation to prevent any incident from occurring.”

Mayorkas’s department, however, warned that a truck convoy on the order of those clogging central Ottawa, Ontario, and disrupting U.S.-Canadian commerce at a bridge near Detroit could emerge and create problems near the Super Bowl site.

“Air Force fighter jets will enforce a temporary flight-restricted zone on Sunday in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration, the FBI and other agencies. NORAD earlier in the week scheduled a defense exercise for the airspace over the Inglewood area. ”

The city police department in Inglewood, where the stadium is located, is the lead local law-enforcement effort. It will coordinate with the Los Angeles Police Department and the sheriff’s department. About 400 deputies were dedicated to the Super Bowl, including extra patrols for the county’s transit system, said Jack Ewell, chief of the sheriff’s Special Operations Division.

Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said his officers will focus on preventing fights between fans, after a San Francisco 49ers fan suffered a brain injury during an altercation outside SoFi during the NFC championship game last month. “The parking lots will be extensively covered,” Fronterotta said.

Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said there has been no disorderly behavior at pre–Super Bowl activities at the downtown L.A. Convention Center. The LAPD has canceled some scheduled time off to ensure the department has enough staff for all the week’s events, including a possible victory parade for the Rams, Moore said.

Only small, clear bags will be allowed inside the stadium on game day, though fans are encouraged to bring as little as possible with them.

“If you want to breeze through security, less is more. The less you bring, the faster you go through security,” said Cathy Lanier, the NFL’s chief security officer.

Security measures extend to the skies, too. The North American Aerospace Defense Command, known as NORAD, planned a defense exercise on Tuesday for the airspace over greater Inglewood. On Sunday, U.S. Air Force fighter jets will enforce the temporary flight-restricted zone in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration, the FBI and other agencies.

The FAA warned that drone operators who fly unmanned aircraft into the restricted area could face large fines and potential criminal prosecution.
