Downtown Night Market in Great Falls will feature new active events

Downtown Night Market in Great Falls will feature new active events

GREAT FALLS — The Downtown Night Market is coming back to Central Avenue on Friday, July 15, 2022 – but with a special addition that is being tested by Get Fit Great Falls.

The event will run from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. along the 300 and 400 blocks of Central Avenue, and feature craft vendors, art demonstrations, food vendors, live music by Clint Reimann, and more.

For this month’s edition of the night market, Davidson Plaza – the space on Central Avenue with the Charlie Russell statue – is being converted into a space where people can come and enjoy and participate.

It is being done by Get Fit Great Galls and the Building Active Communities Initiative. They are partnering with the market to bring what they call an “active space” to the community.

Kim Skornogoski is head of the initiative and says it’s a one-time event to test out and see how it is received.

She said it will include things such as a ping pong table, giant checkers, and even miniature ponies.

They want people to be able to have a connected space and another opportunity to be active and healthy.

“Starting around noon, we’ll have this space set up to be an active space for people to come use,” Skornogoski said. “If you look at it now or any other day, it’s a beautiful space, but not many people use it except if they’re walking somewhere else. It’s not one that people really come to. So the idea is to transform this space into something that that people will use and ideally use in an active way. We hope this idea can plant a seed.”

Whoop-Up Days 2022 to feature traditional Indigenous events

Whoop-Up Days 2022 to feature traditional Indigenous events

The Princess Pageant will see contestants compete for the title of Miss Siksikaitsitapi on August 23, with the winner announced at the Pow Wow on August 24. Contestants will be invited to compete in Tiny Tots, Junior and Senior categories. The winner will represent Lethbridge & District Exhibition and the Blackfoot Confederacy as an ambassador throughout the year.

Contestants in the pageant will be featured in the Whoop-Up Days Parade, and will be scored on their essay submission, speech, dance and talent showcase.

The Lethbridge & District Pro Rodeo will feature intense daily competitions of Warrior Relay Races, with a total of $20,000 purse prize winnings. Participants ride horses bareback and jump from one horse to the next in laps around the racetrack, with two transfers per race.

Mike Warkentin, Lethbridge & District Exhibition Chief Executive Officer said, “This is something that we’ve been working on for over a year.”

“It’s the first step in what we hope to be a really fantastic, much expanded partnership with the Blackfoot Confederacy as we prepare to open the Agri-food Hub and Trade Centre here, really in the heart of Blackfoot territory.”

Warkentin said Lethbridge & District Exhibition wanted to strengthen the relationship between the community, the organization and First Nations in Southern Alberta.

He noted that, “Indigenous culture has been a piece of our programming dating back right to the beginning with some of the world champion rodeo athletes, Pow Wow contestants, we had Indigenous boxing champions competing in the South Pavilion.”

“It’s been a piece of what we do here at Lethbridge & District Exhibition for 125 years, and so, reintroducing this element of our programming was an incredibly important piece to us, as I say, to showcase the entire community and also welcome people from around the world to experience a really important piece of Southern Alberta.”

Warkentin commented that the Pow Wow specifically is a “true cultural experience that you really can’t get anywhere else.” He added that going forward, Lethbridge & District Exhibition is focused on growing its partnership with the Blackfoot Confederacy significantly.

“Blackfoot culture has always been a piece of our history and we want to ensure that it’s a strong piece of our history for the next 125 years,” Warkentin said.

Kirby Smith, Intergovernmental Relations with the Blackfoot Confederacy Tribal Council joined Warkentin on stage to touch on the significant announcement Thursday morning.

Smith said, “Throughout the summer, there’s always major celebrations that go on in each of our communities and so, to have that same kind of a format, that kind of a platform here in Lethbridge, is very significant for us and we’re more than thrilled to be part of the planning and more than thrilled to be part of the events that are going to take place during that week.”

He thanked Warkentin for reaching out to the Confederacy to work towards the partnership and touched on the importance of the Princess Pageant.

Smith said, “The pageant is very significant in the sense that what we’re doing is we’re creating ambassadors for the Lethbridge & District Exhibition and these ambassadors will reign for a whole year and will represent this organization and will represent our partnership at other events and other Pow Wows and celebrations throughout Southern Alberta, but certainly throughout other areas as well.”

Smith commented that this partnership carries added significance following a year where reconciliation was in focus across the entire country.

He said, “This partnership that we’re dealing with now is really a hallmark relationship and it’s one I think that really represents the efforts of communities like Lethbridge, more specifically communities like Lethbridge & District Exhibition, and them reaching out to the Blackfoot Confederacy and to our communities at all levels, to come in and really make a proud statement that this is something that is going to be welcoming, it’s going to be open and very participatory.”

Whoop-Up Days 2022 is on from August 23 to 27, 2022. The kick-off parade festivities will take place August 23 at 9:00 a.m. with marshals Chief Roy Fox of the Kainai Nation, Chief Stanley Grier from the Piikani Nation and Chief Ouray Crowfoot of the Siksika Nation.

More information about the festival, as well as the Indigenous cultural events taking place in Lethbridge, are available at the Whoop-Up days website.

Ubisoft to Feature In-Game Climate Change Events for Green Game Jam 2022

As part of Green Game Jam 2022, Ubisoft is set to be one of several studios spearheading efforts to promote the fight against climate change with special in-game events.

Green Game Jam was started in 2020 by Playing for the Planet, a UN-led initiative that strives to “inspire young people to learn and act in support of the environment” by collaborating with the gaming industry.

In addition to the sales of a tree-themed in-game charity item for the Brawlhalla World Tree Initiative and an exclusive Charity Pack within Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, two other Ubisoft titles will soon debut some dramatic “activations” to players.

Riders Republic, Ubisoft’s arcade-y extreme sports sandbox released this past October, will invite players to join forces to prevent Sequoia National Park from burning down in-game unannounced.

National Nurses Week Events at University of Phoenix Feature College of Nursing Dean Raelene Brooks

Brooks leads in-person panel event May 7 at Southern California Campus and online event May 12

PHOENIX, May 09, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The University of Phoenix College of Nursing Dean Raelene Brooks, Ph.D., RN, led a panel event hosted by the university’s Southern California Campus on Saturday, May 7, in collaboration with the university’s Workforce Solutions team. The event, “Inspired by You,” held to honor and recognize nursing and healthcare professionals from the community and their life-saving contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, welcomed nurses from area healthcare organizations and featured a networking reception, inspiring stories, and panel discussion.

“National Nurses Week is an opportunity to bring more visibility to nurses for their leadership abilities, their highly specialized knowledge and critical thinking skills – and their compassion,” shares Brooks. “University of Phoenix supports and celebrates the tired and tireless efforts of our nation’s nurses at this event. We honor their contributions and the opportunity to explore what we can do to support and grow our extraordinary nursing talent.”

The event also provided each recognized nurse with a platform to highlight someone within their nursing community who has inspired them during their professional journey, and to discuss how things have changed in the nursing field due to the pandemic.

The panel discussion moderated by Brooks included nursing and healthcare leaders:

  • Barbara Barney-Knox, Deputy Director Nursing, Statewide Chief Nursing Executive at California Corrections Healthcare Services;

  • Joanelle Adajar, MSN, RN, PHN, Director of Nursing Professional Practice Magnet Program & Clinical Informatics at Kaiser Permanente Riverside Service Area – Riverside & Moreno Valley Medical Centers; and

  • Pamela Bryant DNP, RN, MSN, FNP-C, PHN, Master of Science in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner Program Chair at University of Phoenix College of Nursing.

Their discussion centered on the National Nurses’ Week theme “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Investing in nursing and respect rights to secure global health,” and explored topics of resiliency and self-care, creating a culture of nursing excellence, and how diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare can be led by nurses.

Brooks will also be keynote speaker at a live webinar hosted Thursday, May 12, at 2:00pm ET, “The History of Nursing, Current Healthcare Education, and Career Opportunities.” Registration for this live webinar event is available here.

A registered nurse for over 25 years, Brooks has practiced extensively in the areas of intensive care, trauma, and critical care in the UC Healthcare System. Completing a master’s in science of nursing education in 2000, she went on to complete her doctorate in Nursing Science with the University of San Diego in 2018. Vancouver's 2022 wine festival will feature 101 wineries from 14 countries pouring at 27 events

🍷 So much wine, so little time… (Just kidding, it’s a week-long event!) 🍷

The 43rd annual Vancouver International Wine Festival is set to take place this May, and this year’s exciting in-person lineup features an impressive 101 wineries from 41 countries across the globe pouring at 27 events over the course of one very full week.

British Columbian wineries have the most prominent showing – of course! – but there will be 18 producers from Italy, 14 from the United States, as well as several from popular wine-producing regions in Spain, Australia, and Argentina. And for the first time ever, the nation of Georgia will have a winery headed to Vancouver for the festival.

The VIWF is primarily based out of the Vancouver Convention Centre, but venues across the city, including restaurants, will host a multitude of ticketed events as part of the celebration. Those events include tastings, seminars, dinners, and the epic Bacchanalia Gala Dinner + Auction (benefiting Bard on the Beach) will take place on Tuesday, May 17 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

The heart of the festival is the Tasting Room, where all 101 wineries will gather for four International Festival Tastings (and two Trade Tastings).

Tickets for the International Festival Tastings (May 19-21) and the Super Pass are now on sale, while tickets for public events (including seminars, winery dinners, minglers and lunches) will go on sale Wednesday, April 6 at 9:30 a.m. Find all ticketing info on the VIWF site
