Track and Field Wins Nine Events at Illini Classic – University of Illinois Athletics

Track and Field Wins Nine Events at Illini Classic - University of Illinois Athletics

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois women’s and men’s track and field teams saw success across the board, highlighted by nine event champions, as they competed at home in the Illini Classic on Saturday (April 9) at Gary R. Wieneke Track and Demirjian Park.

“First of all, our staff did an outstanding job of working through a lot of issues this week with weather,” said head coach Mike Turk. “It was less than ideal all leading up to the meet and we just kept preparing like we were going to put our best foot forward and we got a little break in the weather and it ended up being a beautiful day at Demirjian Park and Wieneke Track.”

“We got a opportunity to compete and some people really stepped forward and took advantage of that. DeVontae Ford is certainly one of those that jumps way out and these are the kind of meets that breakthrough performances you maybe are not expecting them and we are starting to see those kind of performances from a lot of our younger student-athletes. I am very pleased with the efforts we put forward and we have got a big trip coming up this week out to Mt. SAC.”

In the field events, the Orange and Blue saw multiple top three finishes, with redshirt-junior Brian Keyes finishing in third in the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 54.67m to begin the meet. Later in the day, Keyes registered another third-place finish, this time in the discus throw, with a mark of 48.86m. Junior Tyler Sudduth finished second in the same event with a mark of 50.92m. In the final field event, Sudduth grabbed a shot put championship with a 17.97m mark.

Both the women’s and men’s teams saw excellent performances in the vertical events, with freshman Collin Kao winning the men’s pole vault with a mark of 4.75m. On the women’s side, sophomore Kelsey Rothas, junior Noor Abdellatif, and junior Jess Streepy swept the women’s pole vault, with Rothas winning the event with a 3.75m vault, Abdellatif behind her with a 3.50m mark, and Streepy rounding out the sweep with a 3.35m climb. Freshman Tacoria Humphrey and graduate student Kristin Higgins replicated their teammates success in the women’s high jump, combining for a one-two finish, both leaping to a 1.70m mark. Humphrey won the event after using only one attempt to lift herself over the bar, while Higgins used all three of her attempts.

The women’s 4×100 team of juniors Nicole Nguyen, Danni Stoughton and Jeanea Epps and freshman Logan Neely cruised to victory to begin the running events for the Illini, crossing the finish line at 47.78. Shorty after, senior Bret Dannis won the 110m hurdles, setting a personal best along the way, with a time of 13.90. Freshman CJ Shoaf placed third in the same event with a time of 14.80.

Freshman Edwin Siuda (9:17.83) and sophomore Anthony Maida (9:22.52) finished third and fourth in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, while freshman Maggie Gamboa won the women’s 3000m steeplechase in a time of 11:02.01 and junior Katie Hohe finished third with a time of 11:18.10.

Freshman DeVontae Ford earned a runner-up finish in the 400m dash with a time of 47.52, while on the women’s side, Stoughton finished third with a time of 56.08. Senior Jaden Jackson won the 400m hurdles for the second-straight meet with a time of 53.53, with junior Mason Barr finishing third with a time of 56.02. In the women’s 400m hurdles, Neely won the event in a time of 1:01.69, while senior Kionnah Weaver finished right behind Neely, recording a 1:04.04 mark. In the 1,500m, redshirt-junior Colin Yandel finished second with a time of 3:52.98 and senior Emma Milburn set a new personal-best while finishing third, marking a 4:25.48.

Five Wins in Five Events at Titan Invite – University of Oregon Athletics

Five Wins in Five Events at Titan Invite - University of Oregon Athletics

EUGENE, Ore. – In a field-focused day at the Titan Invitational, the Oregon track and field team collected five wins Saturday at the meet hosted by Lane CC. The Ducks’ winner circle included Ellie Akough, Travis Brewster Jr., Harrison Canfield, Mason Strunk and Jaida Ross.

In a familiar ending to last weekend’s Hayward Premiere, Ross and teammate Mine De Klerk finished 1-2 in the discus, respectively. Continuing the similarity to the UO home opener, Ross posted her best mark of the day in the first round with a toss of 51.42m/168-8 to out-distance the field. The Ducks had three in the top four with De Klerk (48.62m) in second and Ellie Akough (40.59m) in fourth.

Brewster needed a legal effort in the third round to continue Saturday after fouls on his first two throws of the day. On his fourth attempt, he got the discus out to 47.04m/154-4 to strengthen his hold on first place. The result represents the first win of his Oregon career.

The Ducks posted another 1-2 finish in the pole vault with Canfield and J Kai Yamafuji in the pole vault. Canfield, a native of Lake Oswego, established a new lifetime best with a 4.95m/16-2.75 clearance. With the win in hand, he took three unsuccessful attempts at 5.05 meters. Yamafuji was second with a final clearance of 4.81m/15-9.25, a new season’s best.

Oregon rounded out its set of wins with Akough and Strunk in the hammer. Akough recorded a season-best measure of 51.39m/168-7 in the third round. The mark is just off her overall PR of 51.68 meters, a toss produced last season while competing unattached. For Strunk (60.18m/197-5), any one of his three legal marks were good enough for the win.

Up next, the Ducks will look to add to their season résumé at the Bryan Clay Invitational (multis) and Mt. SAC Relays in California. The team is back at Hayward Field on April 22-23 for the Oregon Relays.

Single-meet and season tickets for the Oregon home schedule, plus all-session and single-day tickets for the Pac-12 and NCAA Championships, are currently on sale; click HERE or call 800-WEBFOOT (932-3668) to purchase.

UKTF Wins Six Events on Final Day of Florida Relays – University of Kentucky Athletics

UKTF Wins Six Events on Final Day of Florida Relays - University of Kentucky Athletics

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Kentucky track & field earned six event wins on day two, highlighted by nationally-ranked marks from the men’s and women’s 4x400m teams, Abby Steiner and Alexis Holmes at the annual Pepsi Florida Relays at the University of Florida in the James G. Pressley Stadium on the final of two days of collegiate competition.

The Wildcats finished the meet with seven event wins, 12 new times/marks on the UK all-time list, 35 top nine finishes, two program records and 22 personal bests.

“I think we found our identity today and that in adverse times, that’s when true champions are established, that’s when championship teams are developed. I think the majority of the group stepped up today,” Associate Head Coach Tim Hall said.

“It was a true test of resolve today. These weren’t the perfect conditions, but it was something we had to respond to. It sets the tone for meets to come,” Hall said.

Day Two

The rain cleared up just in time for Abby Steiner to shine in the 100m, winning the race with a personal best time of 11.10. It was a personal best for the NCAA 200m Champion, the fourth fastest in the NCAA this season (all conditions) and the fastest in the NCAA this season without wind aid. It was also the fourth fastest time in UKTF history.

Alexis Holmes cemented herself back on top in the 400-meters despite the rain with a win and NCAA leading time of 51.94. It was an outdoor personal best and cemented her as the fourth best for UK all-time in the event.

Canada’s Mark Arendz wins gold in men’s standing biathlon event at Beijing Paralympics | CBC Sports

Canada's Mark Arendz wins gold in men's standing biathlon event at Beijing Paralympics | CBC Sports

Canada’s Mark Arendz struck gold in the men’s standing 10-kilometre biathlon race at the Beijing Paralympics on Tuesday in China.

The Hartsville, P.E.I., native crossed the finish line with a time of 31 minutes 45.2 seconds.

Grygorii Vovchynskyi of Ukraine grabbed silver, finishing in 32:18.0, while Kazakhstan’s Alexandr Gerlits claimed bronze in 33:06.5.

The podium finish gives the 32-year-old Arendz his 10th career Paralympic medal, having already won bronze earlier in these Games in the standing biathlon sprint event. It’s also his second career gold.

Arendz was coming off a fourth-place finish in the standing 20km classical technique cross-country event, ending a medal streak that saw him medal in the standing biathlon sprint just days ago, and in all six events he competed in at Pyeongchang 2018.

It was the first time he had missed the podium since the 10km cross-country event at Sochi 2014.
